I have a very big boy, 95#, and he only gets 3 cups of kibble per day - 1 in AM, 2 in PM. And yes, I wet it with warm water, he seems to like it better. BUT, he gets add ins too. He gets canned food in the AM, a turkey neck piece when we get home from work, and canned food and a square of homemade meatloaf at night. Plus cookies as we are leaving for work.

I am so sorry, and I know its so difficult - intellectually knowing you did the right thing, but emotionally always second guessing yourself. Time really is the only thing that will help. Just know that so many of us have gone through this and that you are not alone in your grief.

My heart is breaking for you. Your Sweetie is no longer in pain. Soon a new hound will find its way to you. Sweetie will make sure of it.

I am so sorry to read of Sal's passing. RIP and run free Sal.

Same here - not all poultry is created equal! Opie cannot eat chicken based kibble - gets pudding poo. But he does eat a turkey neck piece every night, with no ill effects. The only time he got the Big D from turkey was when he stole the turkey carcass out of the garbage on Thanksgiving about 3 years ago, and ate the whole thing!

I hope you don't mind me jumping on this thread. Our girls have been getting a 50/50 mixture of Kirkland (Lamb & Veg.) and Natures Domain (Salmon & Sweet Potatoe). Since they have always had loose stools, we've just accepted that. Do you think the Kirkland or the Natures Domain may be contributing to a "very loose" current condition? Any thoughts or suggestions would be welcome.
I do the same, Opie was on the Kirkland Lamb and Rice, and I bought the ND Salmon, and mix it in 50/50. The reason I do this was he seemed to be losing interest in eating the Lamb and Rice. Well, ever since I did this, not only is he eating better but his poops are bouncy and firm. They had been pretty good, but sometimes were loose. DH (who does most of the walks) says his poops have never looked so good! So we are going to stay on this mixture.

We had a cold LONG winter here in Seattle. We finally had a beautiful sunny warm weekend, so Opie got a bath in his kiddie pool. After drying in the sun I start brushing him outside - And I brushed, and I brushed, and I brushed, and I brushed - the fur kept coming! There was fur everywhere all over the grass!!
-
Opie eats grass too. I worried about this a few years back, but he just likes grass. Sometimes he does need "help" though when it comes out (or doesn't!). He's been known to just sort of stand there with his tail in the air until someone pulls out the offending piece of grass!

I had posted in one of the other threads that Opie (on Kirkland Lamb and Rice) just wasn't that enthusiastic about his food any more. We bought the Natures Domain Salmon, and I am mixing it half and half. He is eating again with vigor, and his poops are better than ever. :) I think we will stay on this mixture.

We work on recall at the fenced dog park. He comes to me most of the time, like I believe is true of most greyhounds. I praise him and love him when he comes to me. I would never "trust" that recall, but I do it for that "just in case scenario" that we all hope never happens.

Bought the ND salmon food today. When we got back I mixed a small amount in with the Lamb and rice kibble and he inhaled his food. Will see if this continues, and if it agrees with him.

We use the gel, and Opie's teeth have been pretty good so far. He is 8. He doesn't like getting his teeth brushed, but he tolerates it. We too use a smaller, softer brush. Its the salmon flavor I think.

We are going to Costco tomorrow, and I know they do carry the Natures Domain. Its a bit more, maybe the $7, and the bag is a few pounds smaller too. But we may try it. Opie has been eating a bit better. He does sometimes go off eating for a few days. But I would not say he is dying to get at the food, he just eats it, with all the add ins I am putting in. We may get the ND tomorrow, I have only seen the salmon there, and try to mix it in, see if that helps.

Opie is fed the Lamb and Rice formula, and the last 2 weeks or so (and yeah, right around when i opened the new bag) he has not been eating his breakfast at all, and even balked at a few dinners until I put tons of add ins on top (more than he usually gets) I chalked it up to spring when he sometimes does this, but now after reading your post I am not so sure. I was even thinking about buying him another food, or at least one to mix in to get him to be excited about eating again. Hmmmmm ......

I get Glucosamine for Opie from Costco, but it is the animal one. Its Best Pet Health Hip and Joint Plus, with Glucosamine, Chondroitin & MSM. They don't always have it in the store, but you can order it from Costco Online. I also order the Salmon oil from Costco too.

Opie ate a whole turkey carcass a few Thanksgiving ago. I came here in an absolute panic, and was given the same advice - give bread, watch him. He was fine, other than 2 days of diarrhea. !!!!!

Twice a day, for sure. When we are going to be out late at night, I split the evening meal in half and feed half at the regular time, and the rest when we get back home. So that would be 3 times on occasion.

I am heartbroken for you, it is so damn hard. How do you do this, you asked? Nothing magic, you just do. You do what will be right for Ava, when the time comes. I pray that Ava still has some good time left, and that you find some peace. Just love her, live in the now, and the rest will follow.
