  1. Thanks for the warm welcome, everyone! We will definitely be around.

Ha! Yeah, the matching markings was a happy coincidence. Though, I think Ellis is actually Arthur's mini me (unless we're going by bulk, which Ellis wins easily).

Thank you so much for posting that beautiful photo! It's so cool that you saw him a couple times in his old life. I did hear that he had a pretty traumatic retirement day, poor guy, but he's doing so well now. The occasional diva scream, but otherwise he's not bothered by much.

He arrived at FF two weeks after I met him at the track last October. If I remember right, he was reluctant to come out of the hauler. All the commotion that day was a little bit too much for him. He looks great in your signature photos.

  2. Alex, our first greyhound, had amelanotic malignant melanoma. It appeared between his lower front two incisors. We went with the mandibulectomy and had those teeth removed plus a small portion of the lower jaw that held those teeth. His lower lip was then pulled back over the surgical site. Other than he drooled a bit more at certain times and if you knew where to look, you'd never know he'd had surgery. This was around 15 years ago, though, so I'd suspect you have more treatment options than we did. Ultimately it was not what took him and that didn't happen until years later. It's very good that you caught it early. My best wishes for his treatment.

  3. Such a handsome guy, and sounds like such a sweet disposition. How did you come to choose him?

His breeder indirectly contacted us last October. Billy Bob had run his last race at Bluffs Run in August 2014 and his breeder asked us then if we'd be interested in taking him. On another occasion he'd told us that he would've given us Bean's and Billy Bob's dam if he'd known we were interested in her (she had already been spoken for). As we had adopted Bean from him the previous year he felt he could entrust us with this special boy. Circumstances were such that we couldn't take Billy in until the end of August of this year.

It's been a wonderful development and friendship in that we've adopted two dogs from the same awesome breeder. We don't take this for granted. Never would I have thought this would happen to us.

  4. A little tardy about sharing this, but we adopted another greyhound to keep The Bean company. May I introduce to you Billy Bob, the sixth greyhound to grace our household:

He's four-and-a-half years old. We'd never before adopted a dog with such a distinguished career:

    • youngest member of the 2012 All-American Team
    • winner of the 2012 $20,000 Dick Andrews Futurity in Palm Beach
    • finalist in the He's My Man Classic
    • ran the 545-yd course at PBKC in 29.15 secs (third-fastest time ever)
    • won 10 starts in a row at Naples

He started his career at PBKC, and also ran at Naples, Mardi Gras, Dubuque (now Iowa Greyhound Park), and Bluffs Run. His last race was in August, 2014. Though born a cryptorchid, he may become a daddy next year if everything works out.

He's very sweet, sensitive, eager to go on walks and car rides, easily correctable, and has the best sad-puppy eyes. Though he tends to be content with playing with toys by himself and hasn't shown much interest in playing with Bean yet (maybe it'll come with time), I think she's glad to have a companion.

  5. you might want to go a group's retirement day when they receive newly-retired dogs to meet their volunteers and see how they do things.

i don't know where you live in los angeles county, but the adoption group (fastfriends greyhound adoption in la habra heights) that we've gotten our first four greyhounds from is having a retirement day this saturday. if you're on Facebook you can go to fastfriends' page and they should have a post announcing the retirement day. or go to their website www.fastfriends.org.

you don't have to limit yourself to just one group, either.

  6. When we adopted our first greyhound, Alex, back in 1993 from the day we first met people at a show-and-tell to the day that we drove down to La Mesa from Torrance to choose from between three candidates it was just three weeks. Our third greyhound, Sadie, was a failed foster after we tried fostering her for a week. We had the home visit and interview after we sent in an application (although I don't recall when within those three weeks the home visit was scheduled).

You essentially tell the interviewer "This is what my home environment is like," so mention that since you have a small dog, you'll need a hound that's small dog-tolerant. If you also have cats, be sure to say that the hound needs to be cat-tolerant, too. If you have a backyard, it should be enclosed. If you live in an apartment instead, you need to mention that.

Besides going to one of their Meet-and-Greet's you might want to go to one of GreySave's homecoming days when they receive newly-retired hounds just to see what these greys are like. Although everyone will be busy working on the dogs you could ask some questions there, too. I know a number of people from GreySave, as well as SoCalGAL, and Fastfriends (we've adopted 4 of our 5 greys from them).

You're about a 45-minute drive from me, so you need an excuse to drive to the coast let me know.

  7. i've recently gone through what you're now going through. take a look at this continuing thread for info about osteo. owners post there with updates of their pups, as well as for mutual support. when i posted there it was a great way to get things off my chest because others who shared their OSA experiences in that thread understood what i was feeling.

do contact dr. couto at couto veterinary consultants so he can review your pup's x-rays and give you a second opinion. he's been there for all of us who've walked down the osteo road with our greys.

  8. thank you all for your posts. it was a week ago yesterday that she died, and it's still too raw for us. i have a lot of habits and routines i've developed over the past ten years when sadie was here, and those die hard.

  9. i'm still tip-toeing around sadie's bed next to my side of the bed before i go to sleep. i catch myself looking at her uneaten bit of dog cookie in her food bowl. i have to remind myself i don't need to go for a walk in the morning, at noon, and in the evening now. i even look at my camera and don't feel a reason to pick it up.

    i expect to see this...:

    ...but i don't.

it'll be hard to wait until may when we go get our puppy.

  10. I have those both saved to my desktop for viewing pleasure when I need it - That craziness is how I will always remember her :beatheart

Here is the link of her stalking for those who haven't seen it. I can't imagine how she is coping with the millions of beds that need to be fluffed in Rainbow Land. Instead of running free - be free and crazy sweet Sadie :beatheart:beatheart

thanks for mentioning sadie's videos. i watched them a few times last night and it brought a smile to my face. she was the goofball of the four greys we've adopted. that was just part of her personality.
