  1. I put all my dogs on FF as soon as I get them (they've all been 6 or older) (except Fletcher!) and even Fletcher with his IBD did not have any stomach problems. I recently started Sallie on their Stress Free Calmplex to see if would help. She is afraid of storms, fireworks, and recently, high winds. It isn't a cure-all, but it has helped. I really only need to drug her during the 4th of July (two large fireworks displays very near me). They also get Joint Health. Molly has recently started having some back end weakness, so I think I am going to switch to the advanced formula. I already have to break them in half for the Princess

I've been tempted to try the Stress Free Calmplex for my spooky girl, Carly. Good to know. :)

  2. How much should I be giving? Piper is about 65 lbs and just turned 5. Her coat is already awesome and doesn't seem to have any adverse affects.

    Per the label:

Good: One tab per 40 lbs. body weight daily

Better: Two tabs per 40 lbs. body weight daily

Best: Three tabs per 40 lbs body weight daily

  3. I'm so very sorry for your loss. I lost my first greyhound, Frostman, suddenly at 10. He had just had his senior wellness exam and everything looked fine. He was eating well and playing with toys before bed. Then around 2:00 am he made a loud whining sound that woke me up and he was dead before I could get to him. His tongue was very dark blue when I turned on the light. A vet friend of mine told me it sounds like it could have been a ruptured aorta (probably a congenital weakness). I was in such shock it didn't occur to me to have a necropsy done. I've always wished in retrospect I had.

I do know the shock you're feeling right now and it's horrible. :grouphug

  4. I also give my hounds a table spoon of coconut oil every night after dinner. I get mine from Trader Joe's. Start off slowly with a 1/4 teaspoon for 10 days, then 1/2 a teaspoon for 10 days, then a teaspoon for 10 days and then a tablespoon. Doing it too quickly can give them loose stools. It has many health benefits. Check out Whole Dog Journal and search coconut oil. They love it and I figure it is another realively inexpensive thing I can do for them.

Here's a WDJ article about coconut oil: http://www.cocotherapy.com/wdj_coconut_oil_article.pdf

  5. How much do you give, is it liquid or capsule and did it have any effect on the digestive system, i.e. diarrhea?

This method worked for my dogs and they never experienced any diarrhea. I generally buy Nutiva brand virgin coconut oil. It's solid a room temperature. Princess will eat a solid glob like a treat. Carly is picky so I have to warm it until it's liquid and pour it on her food.

"Solid or liquid coconut oil can be added to food at any meal or given between meals. The optimum dose for dogs is about 1 teaspoon per 10 pounds of body weight daily, or 1 tablespoon per 30 pounds. These are general guidelines,as some dogs need less and others more. But don’t start with these amounts. Instead, introduce coconut oil a little at a time in divided doses. Because coconut oil kills harmful bacteria, viruses, parasites, yeasts, and fungi, the burden of removing dead organisms can trigger symptoms of detoxification. Headaches, fatigue, diarrhea, and flu-like symptoms are common in humans who consume too much too fast, and similar symptoms can occur in dogs.Even in healthy dogs, large amounts of coconut oil can cause diarrhea or greasy stools while the body adjusts. Start with small amounts, such as ¼ teaspoon per day for small dogs or puppies and 1 teaspoon for large dogs. Gradually increase the amount every few days. If your dog seems tired or uncomfortable or has diarrhea, reduce the amount temporarily."
