  1. My first 3 greys have all passed from Osteosarcoma.

Mimosa Grove is a descendant of HB's Commander

Mi Ami is a descendant of HB's Commander

Deco Barnett is a descendant of HB's Commander on both dam and sire sides, and also Wigwam Wag.

    My current dogs are healthy.

We just adopted Centeno in February. She is a descendant of Wigwam Wag on both sides, and also HB's Commander

Mac's Cher is a descendant of HB's Commander.

  2. I fell in love with Bam Bam right here on Greytalk. Coach had posted his picture. He had been injured and retired, and Coach posted pix of a beautiful red greyhound with soulful eyes. He said Bam Bam would make someone a wonderful pet. He had just turned 2 years old. We adopted him a few weeks before Christmas, 2007, and he became our 3rd greyhound, and we had a pack. We actually didn't adopt him right away, we fostered with intent to fail. I wasn't so sure 3 was a good idea, 2 was ideal, he was male, and we didn't know if he was cat safe. He was a pain in the butt to housetrain after our 2 girls were such a breeze, and quickly earned the nickname "Misser Pisser". He seemed fine with the cats until a few months later when Dash took off too fast from the bed, and Bam's instinct kicked in and he chased, and caught Dash's leg before I could stop him. I still remember the person answering the phone at the vet saying, "your GREYHOUND bit your cat?". Dash needed a few stitches in his leg, but was no worse for wear. I don't think Bam intended any harm, but I then questioned myself whether he might do it again and if we should let him go to another home. I think it was that moment that I realized he was MY dog. We then went and signed the paperwork and made it official.

He was a special hound. He had a special "wookie" sound he would make when he really wanted something, usually dinner, or to go out. He loved to lay his big ole head in your lap and get petted. He would stand there for hours if he could. Those big soulful eyes would never look in yours though. He was not dominant and it bothered him when I tried to teach him "Watch Me". Around other male dogs on our walks, he was a different dog though. We had another greyhound, Odie, in our neighborhood that was friendly with our girls.... Until Bammy told him that he was messing with HIS women!

He was afraid of thunder and fireworks. His safe place was "guarding the washer" and he was always in the way when I did laundry during rain storms.

Unfortunately like our girls, Mimosa and Mimi, he also developed the telltale symptoms of Osteosarcoma. It was in his left shoulder. We hoped it was just arthritis, but deep down we all knew we had been "snake bitten" a 3rd time. Last night he had a horrible night and let us know it was time. Today we said our goodbyes and our hearts are breaking again.

Goodbye Misser Pisser, Bammy Lammy, Bamalamadingdong. You were a special boy and we miss you like crazy. Say hi to Mimi and Mimosa for us.

  3. Sorry to say, I'm back again.

Mimosa Grove, lost to Osteosarcoma left hip 3/3/14, age 10

Mi Ami (Mimi) lost to Osteosarcoma left knee 7/31/15, age 12

Deco Barnett (Bam Bam), age 10, still with us, diagnosed with Osteosarcoma in left shoulder this month. We have not done xrays this time, but our vet is 99% certain it's back again.

Mac's Cher (Cher), age 5, is healthy.

  4. Our sweet girl is gone. Our hearts are broken. She developed the evil Osteosarcoma in her knee a few months ago. She fought the good fight.

I first saw Mimi's picture on Greytalk, posted by Cathie, and Mimi was looking for a home. I was smitten by her soulful eyes and gorgeous face. We had our first greyhound, Mimosa Grove, (who we lost to OS last year) for about 6 months, and I had already learned the "rule" with greyhounds being like potato chips, and it seemed that Mimosa needed a buddy. So Mimosa and I went out to Cathie's farm to meet Mimi. I already knew that she was shy, very shy it seemed, but that she liked children.

Mimosa was a little snarky with Mimi, and we weren't sure things would work. I left for a few minutes to retrieve Mimosa's muzzle from the car and when I came back, shy girl Mimi ran right up to me! I was thrilled! Cathie and I arranged for a home visit, and we also had a male dog, Nicki, visit, because we were concerned that Mimosa might do better with a male.

Cathie, Mary and Ann (I think) came out the house with the 2 dogs. I am very happy to say that Mimosa was the perfect hostess. Mimi seemed terrified and hid in the corner. We went for a walk, Mimi seemed to relax, and when we returned, Mimi went up to my front door as if to say, "Let me in, I'm home." (really she was probably just trying to get away from Nicki, who was more interested in her, than he was in us).

We brought Mimi home about a week later, and she hid for awhile, and liked the retreat of our bedroom. We gave her some space and time, and she blossomed into the most loveable, sweetest, girl I have ever met. She slowly came out of her shell and demanded attention! She was smart, never had a housebreaking accident. But she didn't seem too smart at learning commands. We were able to teach her to spin in a circle on command, but she seemed to get really frustrated when we tried to teach anything else. So she was our one-trick pony.

She had a low pitched whine when she wanted something. She was afraid to go thru a door that she deemed was not opened wide enough for her (minimum 3 feet). She would stand and whine until someone came to her beckoning, and let her in or out of the bedroom, or whatever door was not right.

She never met a stranger, human or dog. She would often lean on people she had just met, and we quickly decided her middle name would be Eileen (I lean).. If you came over and sat on the couch, she would shove her head into your thigh, demanding a neck rub.

She loved sunning herself and loved getting wet in the sprinklers.

She didn't like change, and preferred to walk the same route, and became anxious if we deviated. When we lost Mimosa last year, and adopted Cher, she instantly accepted her as a member of the pack, and taught Cher that she was not to mess with anyone else's food bowl.

Then earlier this year the limp started. We were devastated because of what had happened to Mimosa. It was in the same leg as Mimosa, left rear, in her knee. She fared better, and seemed to have very minimal pain until recently. She HATED the Tramadol and could smell it a mile away. We had to get really creative on giving it to her. Yesterday was tough on her, and we realized that her pain had worsened. We could see the tumor had become very large and it was time. Despite it all, she would still run to the door on her 3 good legs, when she heard someone at the biscuit box.

This morning we said our goodbyes. I still can't believe she is gone. RIP sweet girl. Mama loves you. You were Daddy's favorite.

  5. I'm still feeding it and all are still doing great! No gas, solid poos, and shiny coats. The only add-ins I do are coconut oil and Olewo carrots once a day. The price is great for the quality. The closest place to me is about 30 minutes away too, but what I do is buy a months supply each time I go to make it worth it.

Can you tell me what you pay, and what size bag? I'm sure it varies by location, but I am curious.

  6. Thought I would give an update on this. I started my gang on the Yukon River 1 1/2 weeks ago. I did a quick transition with them over 4 days because they are used to their food being switched up and I've never had a problem doing a quick switch.

After this short time all of their poos have been AMAZING and they have NO gas!!!!! Badger and Gus have always had horrible gas no matter what I did. I am beyond excited about this! :balloonparty

It's the little things in life :)

Are you still feeding it? I was at a dog event on Saturday and got some samples. Cher loved it, but the nearest dealer is 30 to 45 minutes away. Trying to decide if it's worth it. Currently buying TOTW online.

  7. Sorry for the delay in responding. We had a rough week. Lots of housebreaking issues. She went in her crate on 3 different days, also in the house. I was in contact with our vet after the 2nd day and was told to give her Imodium and a bland diet. We did that, and then her timing was off and we had housebreaking issues overnight. So I decided to take her to see the vet Monday. Bloodwork and fecal sent off to lab. Results back today and everything normal, except for electrolytes low, but expected after diarrhea. She was down about 2 pounds since her visit a couple of weeks ago. She's on prednisone for inflammation and Flagyl. Output is now normal, and no mistakes in the house in a couple of days :pepper:clap

She seems perkier too. Now we just have to fatten her up! She was thin when we got her (on 4/4), and we need to get a little more weight on her!

  8. Cher had the big D in her crate yesterday. My daughter found it and took her out several times yesterday afternoon. She also puked once DH gave her dinner and I gave her a bath last nite after work. She was fine all night. Ate breakfast and seemed normal today. My son works at noon and when he went to take her out late this morning she had the Big D in her crate again. Hubby thinks she got into some Armadillo crap before he could stop her yesterday morning on their walk. I messaged my vet but no response yet. We all work until after they close, except for DD who will be home after school.

What can we give her for dinner? Think she needs to be seen?

  9. Our beautiful girl is gone. She was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma in her Left femur about a month ago. She was doing so well, on Tramadol and Rimadyl twice a day. She was bearing weight on the leg and acting like her sweet self. Then, early Saturday morning, our other 2 started to play with a toy. Mimosa tried to get involved, and spin in a circle in excitement. We think that might have fractured the leg. It was a rough weekend, and no amount of pain medication gave her much relief.

We made the difficult decision today to let her go. She was in pain. It was the best decision for her, and the hardest for us. I miss her like crazy already and can't believe she is really gone. Of my 3, she was definitely Mama's girl, and my favorite. She was our first greyhound, which led to us adopting 2 more. She was well behaved, smart, and loved to give kisses.

She had a Mickey Mouse silhouette on her side.

We will miss you, Baby Girl.

  10. Mimosa was doing so well. Her pain was under control, she turned 10 last Sunday.

Then yesterday morning, my other grey, Bam Bam decided he wanted to play, and began to fling a toy around the room. Mimi got involved and began to play, then Mimosa decided to play and tried to spin around. She hurt herself, and has not been the same since. We had to go out of town for the day, and my son said she never laid down. She went from bearing almost full weight on the leg, to only touching her toes to the ground. She didn't sleep last night much, is drinking a lot and was panting. Got ahold of my vet and he said to give her extra Tramadol. She is marginally better today, but restless. She is still eating, but in pain.

I'm afraid the time has come in the next day or so. I am so not ready to let her go. :cry1 I can't imagine her not being here. I know that is selfish, and I am trying to gather the strength. My daughter was crushed when I told her of Mimosa's diagnosis. This is going to be so difficult.

  11. Thank you for your kind words, everyone. Mimosa seems to be feeling a little better. She is putting more weight on the affected leg. She roaches a lot! And she remains her usual perky self and she loves her treats and walks! We recently discovered Waggin' Train Jerky Duos (got a full size sample in the mail). She goes nuts for those so we will search for more!

  12. Lots of really good information here, and lots of different treatments I see! We are now almost 1 week post diagnosis. Mimosa continues to be her happy self. I think she is actually feeling better since we started her on pain meds. She is on 50 mg Rimadyl and 50 mg Tramadol, twice daily for both. She roaches a lot. I wonder if that position is more comfortable? Her tumor is on her left femur. We are giving her lots of treats. Just got a sample bag of Waggin' Train jerky duos. She LOVES those. She is putting more weight on the affected leg, so that is good. Sometimes she barely limps.

My kids now know and are of course upset, but understand, and also do not want to put her thru amputation. (No disrespect intended to those who choose to amputate).

Thanks everyone for all the good information. it is comforting.

  13. Thanks everyone. I am holding off on telling my kids (who are 14 and 21, but they will be crushed). My 14 year old has a big test tomorrow. She is studying, and I need to let her concentrate on that. My son is in class tonight. We will probably tell them tomorrow night.

Mimosa is doing OK. My hubby said she had a nice walk with the other 2 dogs, and put weight on the foot. She has been getting extra chicken and cheese for her pain meds, and sleeping.

  14. I hate that I am on this page. Mimosa was diagnosed with Osteo today. She started limping a few weeks ago, and then barely would put weight on her left rear leg. I was so afraid of what the diagnosis would be, and x-ray today pretty much confirmed it. Vet said a biopsy would be needed for definite diagnosis, but in his vast experience with greyhounds (his office is the track vet, and sees all the greys going up for adoption), that it is Osteo. He thinks it is very aggressive and that she will not have much time.

I already knew before diagnosis that I would not do amputation. No disrespect to any of you who have, but I do not want to put my dog through that.

So She is on Rimadyl and Tramadol and we are going to love on her for as long as we can. :weep
