Probiotic Use, Changing Products--Any Advice?

Recommended Posts

Does anyone have any experience with or an opinion on the following, regarding changing from one probiotic product to another:

I am switching from daily Iams Prostora prescription only probiotic (very expensive!) to daily VetriScience, VetriBiotic BD for our senior girl who has inconsistent poop forms, as well as a sensitive tummy (& a picky eater).

Since there was no lapse between the 2 different probiotics, should I administer the VetriBiotic at the maintenance dose or at the initial dose (more tablets per day for 4 weeks, then maintenance level)?

There are more stains of bacteria in the VetriBiotic than the Prostora.

Thanks for any suggestions y'all may have!

1) Why are you using a probiotic?

2) Are you seeing any clearcut benefit with the probiotic you currently use?

Prostora has a single bifidobacterium species, which they have chosen to patent. Whether this is truly a "new" species, or just an old species that they've found a new strain of and decided to patent, is a very good question.

Ventribiotic is L. casei, Bif. thermophilum, Enterococcus faecium, and S. boulardii. You can purchase one or more of these as individual supplements OTC, and add them on a revolving basis. E. faecium is the exception.

My recommendation would be to make your own yogurt, and use that. Encapsulated probiotics may have 10-20 million "live" critters (actually spores), but a cup of yogurt contains 50 times that. Ferment for 24 hours at 100-110F, and refrigerate after it cools down. A gallon of organic milk runs $6, makes enough yogurt for weeks.

Do all yougurts contain this much or just home made? I've often wondered about it.
