Guest Giselle Posted February 27, 2011 Share Posted February 27, 2011 Hi, update on Giselle. Thanks to all who replied to her other thread; the insights were very helpful. Her specialist put her on 20mg Pred/2X a day. The vet tech and the pharmacist called this dosage "anti-inflammatory", which was a little confusing to me because I later asked whether they meant for the dosage to be high enough to have immunosuppressive effects. The pharmacist agreed that Pred can be an immunosuppresant based on dosage, but she continued to call it an anti-inflammatory for Giselle Not too sure what was going on there, and I don't have enough experience with Pred to know what dose is immunosuppresant or not. Insights on that are helpful, too. We're going to recheck in 2 weeks; I'm hoping so hard for some kind of improvement. She still isn't doing well, but she's got so much spirit. JJNg Posted February 27, 2011 Share Posted February 27, 2011 In general, an anti-inflammatory dose of prednisone is 0.5-1 mg/kg/day, and immunosuppressive is 2-4 mg/kg/day. Willow weighs about 55-57 lbs (about 25 kg), and when we put her on an anti-inflammatory dose, we started on 20 mg pred once a day. At 40 mg/day, it sounds like Giselle is probably getting close to immunosuppressive, although it would be low end or kind of an in-between dose. What antibiotics has she been treated with, and for how long? Is she still on any antibiotics now? Hope she feels better with the pred. With Willow, it helped very quickly.
