My vet wants me to take him to the (Minnesota) U of M but that is not a option at this time. I was wondering where in Mn. can I get treatment for him other than the U. RobinM Posted December 19, 2009 Share Posted December 19, 2009 My Polli had osteo of the left front leg. We she was 9.5 at the time and a real spit fire. We had no option of pain management as she had tripped and broke her leg. It had to be amputated or say goodbye which was not an option at that point. We did the ampuation and 5 rounds of chemo. We got 5 good months before the cancer had spread- less the 1 week after each chemo that threw her threw a loop. So in all actuality between the healing after the amp which took 3 weeks and the chemo (= 8 weeks) - we did not get nearly the amount of time we had prayed for. IF we had the option for pain management- We may have had the same amount of time with less trauma. But if is the largest word in the english language. I've had 3 with Osteosarcoma. Morgan lived 3 years after amputation and 4 rounds of carboplatin. He was euthanized at 13.5 for LS; the cancer did not recur. With Alex, we found lung mets after the 3rd chemo and only had him a few more weeks. Demon was amputated in July and had chemo. So far, he's doing great. There are some long-term survivors for osteo. but it's not common. My 11-yr-old boy Whitey is one-month post-amp now and doing great. First chemo treatment last Wednesday. If you search on GT for Whitey in H&M, you can read the thread that chronicles how his amp went. You can also see my blog (in my signature line) for "What to Expect with a Leg Amputation." The vet I use is up in Linstrom, MN. It's about an hour north of the Cities, but she is FANTASTIC and I adore her. She vets all of Minnesota Greyhound Rescue's hounds. They have an orthopedic vet there who could've done the amp, but we chose to go to a surgeon in Blaine who does amps all the time. Whitey is our 4th greyhound this year with osteosarcoma. First Tanner, age 13. Tanner's was in an odd location, high up on his hip, near his spine, and we did not catch it as osteo in time. He was too old and frail to put through an amp, although mentally he was just as spry as ever. From the time he first limped until goodbye was maybe 5 months. That one just about did me in. Then Annie. She was diagnosed the day after Tanner died. She would shake for an hour after we even cut her toenails, so we knew we wouldn't do any amp with her. Her pain was only manageable for 2 more months. Then Crisco, who had osteo of the spine, which is extremely painful. From diagnosis to goodbye was just over one week. He was my heart. Whitey was diagnosed 2 weeks after we adopted him, and he seemed so spry, we wanted him to have a shot at life with a real forever family. Dr. Couto at OSU (the leading osteo specialist in greyhounds) has found that 24 hour veterinarian care after amputation prevents many significant complications. Be sure your vet understands about hyperthermia and bleeding (even though the tests indicate normal clotting factors) that are common with greyhounds undergoing surgery. Dr. Couto can be reached at couto.1@osu.edu Your vet can email him the x-rays or you can overnight them for a free second opinion. If amputation is an option and you decide to go that way, Dr. Couto can send your vet his recommended surgical protocol. I believe that this includes Amicar. Your vet may need to order this. Dr. Couto can also send chemo medication to your vet at no charge along with the appropriate protocol. I am so sorry to hear about all greys with cancer!! I lost one of my dogs two months ago with cancer. Than this week I took two of my dogs, black lab and grey to the vet. I had to leave them both there. Vet called me and said my lab had only about a week or less to live as he had tumor on his spleen and my Mort has bone cancer. My lab died when I was at the vet's to pick them up. the vet said he heard my voice and that was it. So I have lost two with in the last two months with cancer and Mort has cancer too. I called the vet in Coon Raipds and made a appointment with him. He suggested a chest x-ray and a second opinon. I just wonder why there is so much cancer in this area! Guest bigorangedog Posted December 20, 2009 Share Posted December 20, 2009 SO sorry to hear about your other pups!! I know how you feel -- we've lost 5 in the last year. It's a horrible place to be. I hope that you can have a good outcome with Mort. Please email or PM me if you want to talk about anything. You definitely want high-resolution chest x-rays, and probably also x-rays of his other limbs to be sure it's not anywhere else, before pursuing an amputation.
