Guest Sasha
Does anyone know anything about using coconut butter for IBD and allergies. A friend of mine has a great dane who has problems with allergies to food and her vet recommended mixing coconut oil in with his food. She says it worked after 2 weeks and he stopped spitting up food. Has anyone used this for their grey and if so what is the verdict? Thank you, Sasha's Mom
ahicks51
Never thought about trying this with hounds, but there are plenty of anecdotal data out there about this being the case with people- IBD and a number of other conditions are improved with coconut oil. Part of this may be due to some "real" biochemical effect in which the fats in coconut oil are used in a more... direct fashion by the body. But there may also be a dietary component in that pure fat from coconuts will "dilute" the other foods being provided. For those hounds whose conditions are exacerbated by grains and other dietary carbohydrates, this would mean the fat:carb ratio is improved, possibly ameliorating any existing conditions. But that's well into the theoretical realm. I don't think it could hurt to try. RobinM
Beau has IBD and I wouldn't dream of giving him coconut oil. The only thing that Beau has is z/d and dried tilapia as jerky treats. If you do try it, make sure you try it alone, meaning don't add anything new into his diet or you won't know what causes the flare.
