Degenerative Disk Disease

My sweet 3 year old has just been diagnosed with disk disease in his cervical area. We were shocked with his young age. I am sure there are others who have had this with their greys. Looking for any advice that was helpful with your hound. He is on remidyl (sp?) right now. Feeling a little better. It is early stage right now, but we want to make sure he is getting the best for him. I am going to check into a holistic vet also to work with, and am wondering if anyone has done acupuncture for their hound with this and if it helped. Thanks any help/information.

I truly believe in the power of a holistic vet for acupuncture and chiro. My grey has had a weak back/weak legs for years. I swear that my holistic vet is the one that keeps her going. We go once a month now for maintenance. He can also recommend certain chinese herbs. Good luck!

Degenerative Disc Disease or DDD is caused by improper movement of that joint segment. A Chiropractor and an Acupuncturist will probably do a lot of good.

Here is the most recent thread about my Canyon, who is day 11 post surgery. He had a torn disc in the cervical spine which they repaired by ventral slot and disc fenestration.

We were unfortunately not able to avoid surgery. Perhaps if we had known much earlier what the problem was, we could have done more to prevent it.

I'd be happy to communicate with you if you'd like support and more detail. Just PM or email me. :colgate

Thanks so much, I would like to talk with you about what you have went through with DDD. I am not sure how to PM? I would like to know if you had done alternative treatments, etc. before the surgery. Just let me know

Cindy, it took us a long while to figure out where Canyon's pain was coming from because he ripped off his dew claw at the same time as injuring his neck. We thought that's why he was crying out for the longest time. :(

Because of that confusion, we didn't crate rest him till 6 weeks after the injury. I think the window of opportunity for natural healing had closed by then. :( We did take him for acupuncture once, and that really seemed to relax him. His pain was becoming unmanageable by then though and surgery was our only option left.

I have PM'd you all the previous threads about Canyon's journey so you can read the steps we went through.

I would HIGHLY recommend you see a veterinary neurologist with your boy if at all possible. If you would like to talk about what you are going through, send me your phone number by PM and I will call you via Skype. :)

Lou will be going on Monday for cervical xrays as he has and is presently experiencing neck pain.

I take him to chiro every 2 weeks. Right now Lou is on short walks and absolutely no stairs. He is on dexamethasone and musclel relaxer when needed . Where your hounds diagnosed by xray or MRI's??

He was Dx by x-ray, we have him on pred and tramadol which seems to be really helping. We are keeping in touch with our vet every 2-3 days with updates. He said if things do not seem to be getting better he does want us to take him to a neurologist. I am also checking into alternative therapies in conjunction with the conventional, such a the acupuncture and herbs, etc... We are keeping him quite and confined as much as possible, since we have stairs in our house, and he tends to bound up and down when he feels well.

I just got back from the vet with my girl Kylie, with that same diagnosis..I was so scared, I still am.

How old is your girl? Our guy just turned 3, and I know it was a great shock for us. I have gone through all the what if ..... We are in the early stages and still in bit of shock. Sending :grouphug for your girl

Hugs to all. We're worried that our 9.5 year old is facing disc issues. And possibly late stage... we see a specialist tomorrow.

We're in this together!
