Just back from the vets and and at last we have a probable diagnosis, french heartworm, didn't think we had such a thing in the u.k. but apparently more common in Ireland and the south west. The scan shows two tiny dark areas which are blood clots and a thin black line which vet thinks is a worm that has entered the blood stream and lodged in the blood vessel in his neck causing clotting problems. A blood test will be sent to Newfoundland to a specialist to try and confirm as they are hard to detect as they dont shed larva very often. They are found in slugs and snails which have ingested contaminated feaces .He has been given milbemax tablets to take and we go back in 6 weeks for another blood test, if this diagnosis is correct he could be running and playing again a few months! Don't know if any u.k. members have heard of this before, but it is becoming more common the u.k..

All his blood and faecal samples came back negative from America so i don't know how it would normally be diagnosed.I will do a bit of research on the internet for more information.
