Ironically, if you Googlesearch for Xylitol, it's touted by dentists and all sorts of folks as good for us because it doesn't promote tooth decay. It actually raises blood sugar values! Same with all substitutes ending in -tol: mannitol, sorbital, xylitol, and I bet there are others out there.
