  1. :weep I am so sad to read this. What a gift she was! I know you are missing her now. Sending prayers for your hearts to heal. I'll bet she sends you a sign very soon.

  2. I have been adopting greyhounds for the last 17 years. I STILL get nervous when we bring a new one home!:lol We've never had any real issues with any of the ones we've brought home. The growling is normal, is to be expected, and yes it still freaks me out a bit when it happens.

I've always found that walking them together does a lot to get them used to each other. You may find after a few days, one will wait for the other if he/she is lagging behind. They'll get into a rhythm and work things out between them.

  3. Streak was recently diagnosed with atypical cushing's. She was drinking excessively and had no neck hair and no stomach hair. Our vet sent her bloodwork to the University of Tenn--I was told they are the leaders in this testing. I believe the test you referred to would come back normal for a dog with atypical cushing's. So, if all other tests have been run, you might talk to your vet about atypical cushing's. Streak has been on melatonin for a few months and has already begun to grow hair and her water consumption is getting under control. Hope this helps. It can be so frustrating trying to get to the bottom of things.

  4. Heather, I am so sorry to read about Stella.:cry1 I don't have any experience with this type of cancer. The late Miss Magic had kidney disease and developed pancreatitis. She spent several days in ICU at NCSU. After her pancreatic values came back down she would not eat. Her kidneys had begun to shut down completely. However, the one food she did show some interest in and would eat a tiny amount of was cat food.

After she came home, she still would not eat. I thought perhaps all of the acid in her stomach was causing her to not eat. I was hopeful that getting some food in her stomach would help to neutralize the stomach acid, so the vet agreed to let us try force feeding a couple of times. I liquified chicken, yogurt etc. in a blender and used a syringe used for horse injections. When she opened her mouth to investigate the syringe, I would gently squirt the mixture towards the back of her tongue.

Sending prayers and healing thoughts for Stella. :hope

Note to others reading this: Force feeding is a last resort ONLY to be done after approval from your vet.

  5. Yep, eating grass can cause them to vomit. Makes you wonder why they do it. She should be fine. If she feels like eating, I'd let her. She may have had an upset stomach because it was so close to dinner. An empty stomach can cause them to vomit bile.

We were having a recurrent problem with Streak vomiting bile in the a.m. around 5:30-6:00. We normally get up at 6:00. We guessed it was due to an empty stomach. They eat their dinner at 4:30 p.m. So, normally she and Jonelle get three scoops at each meal. Now, we only feed two scoops for the evening meal and then save the third scoop until about 10:00 p.m. She has not had an incident since we started this new schedule several months ago.
