  1. Have you tried putting cookie sheets on the counter so that they hang over the edges. Then when he puts his paws up there it will knock the cookie sheets off and scare him? I works for some dogs.

I bet that would scare him. Probably the cat that jumps up there, too! It may work for a while.

  2. I'm finally stumped. After all the years of owning greys and fostering this guy has a behavior that is driving me nuts. At the age of 8 he is the worst counter surfer and food thief I have ever seen. He came here overweight and I thought we could get him down a few pounds but he has gained weight! He steals food from the counter, the table, the other dogs.....anywhere he can get it. Doesn't matter what it is, even peaches and bananas. He will take anything in a plastic bag, including non-food. I guess I've never had one that was so persistant. He watches food with that high prey drive stare. At his age they are usually over this. Tonight he ate a whole bag of buns that I thought were out of reach. He will do this while we are here. He gets into things that no other greys have bothered. He is so sneaky! After years of having only older dogs we've had to start checking everything before leaving the kitchen. Thank goodness he doesn't know how to open cupboards. How do you curb this behavior?

  3. Yea! Glad Joe made it home yesterday!

Hope Joe's doing better today. How's Arwen??

Not to hijack Joe's thread but, Wenny is doing fabulous. Took a while to get back to eating and still doesn't eat a full meal but she could stand to loose a few. (not too much!) She would love to jump on the couch but needs another week for that.

  4. Arwen is zonked on lidocaine, fentanyl and kektamine tonight. She will spend tonight at least in ICU. The mass on her liver was removed along with her spleen for good measure after a little scare that it might have attached to her diaphram. It came out and she bled very little during surgery, only about 100ml. ( they give 500ml when they donate) Hope that is all she loses. Fingers crossed for no post-op bleeding.

Super stars of the day are Dr. London, Dr. Townsend, and Dr. Mc Laughlan. We've had our evening call from our student and shouldn't hear anymore till morning.

    Need to sleep now....

  5. Suzy, knowing what a blur any time spent at OSU is like......did I meet you when I was there in either Oct 09 or Jan '10?

Possibly. :lol I have a short memory for people. What dog did yu have there?

Diamond, my black girl was there for an amp in Oct.

I had Diamond back there (as a tripod) to keep her sister Pearl company in Jan. Pearl's white/black. Pearl was in for a splenectomy. And actually Pearl was at OSU briefly in Oct too because I thought it would be a good comparison to have littermates, one with cancer, one without. But Pearl probably already had her cancer then.

Both are gone already. Pearl made it only 3 weeks. Dima got 6 months.

Doesn't ring a bell with me but Angel was there for cardiology in Oct. 09.

  6. Thanks, guys. I know that you know how it is, Mary Pat. You just can't get this kind of support from your "normal" family and friends. I've lost 4 in the last 2 years, most recently Saturn, who we only had 4 months. He was a 13 year old bounce. His hemangio. was silent until it was deadly. We made a last ditch effort to treat him but the evil stuff was like wild fire. He was gone in 4 days. Now Arwen has the same thing! We found her's while there is still a chance for surgery and chemo if the CT scan shows no other masses started yet. Fingers crossed. Our Shilo was DX with Lymphoma in Feb and is finishing up 25 weeks of chemo. Now it is a waiting game to see how long his remission will last. He had to have LP tie back in June. So you can say we are having a bad year. We are planning to go into surgery on Friday if all goes well.

  7. p.s. I didn't see Suzy (packmom) there today. I heard that she got bad news yesterday but didn't hear what the final diagnosis was. I am afraid it was liver cancer or hemangiosarcoma.

Jane, glad to hear Joe is through the surgery and resting. Now comes the hard 2 weeks for you. Arwen has hemangiosarcoma and is scheduled for surgery on Friday since the prefered surgeon is out until then. Pending opinion of Dr. C. I'm still waiting to hear from him. Can't believe it. It has been only 1 month since we lost Saturn to the same thing!

  8. Spent half the day with Jane at OSU as we both waited out the mysterious process that goes on behind those exam room doors. Last I heard they were trying to get on the surgery schedule for tomorrow before I had to leave. I'm sure Jane will update soon.

  9. Jane, glad you guys had a goood time. I wish I could have stayed. The wellness fund is so important. Saturn started acting funny that night and we ended up right back in Onco.with another cancer dog. Dr C. was just speachless. As always he tells me he will help as much as he can with paying for treatments. Unfortunately the Hemangiosarcoma was large and growing faster than the chemo could work and we said gooodbye to Satty on Thursday with Dr. Urie by our sides. Dr. C. e-mailed me to say he was too upset to call and knew I would be too. Last year the famous Bosha died the day of the ceremony. I think I won't go next year. :(
