What awesome pics of your beautiful girl, Jey; and they really don't do her justice! Sending you hugs.

Just seeing this now. My fingers are crossed for you and Milky Way. Our Alex went fast (just over 2 weeks from spotting the wrist and noticing limping). Hoping that it's not osteo! Keep us posted.

Never used it, in fact never heard of it till now. Looked on Amazon, and they have it for $18.73! Don't know if that's a good price or not, just thought I'd pass it along as they say list price is more than twice that.

So sorry to hear this, Gil.
Godspeed, Tyrone!

What greyt pictures of Tiny! So sorry you had to say goodbye.
-
Her battle is over, and she knows how much you love her. Sending hugs!

Thinking of you and Tiny, Kristen. We went through the same doubt yesterday. It certainly seems like an impossible decision, doesn't it?

He's gone. The vet was amazed to see how much the tumor grew in the two weeks since we first spotted it. Our hearts are broken. Two osteo deaths in just under 4 months for us.

Oh how we wish this were an April Fool joke, big guy!
On the day of my grandmother's funeral, we heard of you - a big beautiful five year old boy whose owner passed away a few days prior. We knew who you were, of course, as we had planned to meet you and talked of adopting you when you originally came to our group two years prior. But you were already spoken for at that time, so we wished you well. When we found out you were in the animal shelter, we offered to take you and some friends jumped through the hoops to get you to us (thanks, Sarah!)
We had four years of your charm - hanging out with DH in the bathroom each morning while he showered, letting us know whenever the phone or doorbell was ringing, and showing us your belly! We called you our "eye candy", as your heart always seemed bigger than your brain. You were a beautiful boy, and were popular at meet and greets and anywhere else you could lean into a perfect stranger and pin them down so they'd spend a minute petting you.
We had hoped to celebrate your ninth birthday with us! We hate that cancer took you so quickly, but we did not want you to go through prolonged suffering either. It was an agonizing decision for us. Please know that we will always love you and never forget you!
You were always convinced you fit fine in the itty bitty kitty bed!
Sunbathing, yesterday.
P.S. Hope that Buddy and Joe welcomed you and introduced you to the others.

Got the big Arby's roast beef sammich and a Dairy Queen double dish of vanilla all ready for Alex. He is in a lot of pain regardless of being maxxed out on meds, is limping a lot, and the tumor has doubled in size, so we are taking him in tomorrow morning to say goodbye. But first, he gets his extra special yums. And of course we'll continue with our extra attention and love until the end. ♥

Starting dose for our grey Alex (78#) was one 50mg tablet every 12 hours, with a max dose of 2.75 tablets every 6 hours. He is taking that in combo with Rimadyl, one every 12 hours.

For those of you who have used Gabapentin, what was the dosage and where was the best price?
My vet doesn't carry it, so they want me to let them know what people pharmacy I want to use. Wondering if it's one of those $5 Walmart-type drugs.
I plan to search around this afternoon, but thought maybe someone would know offhand and save me some phone calls!
Thanks

How old is Alex?
Indigo limps, but still tries to run after squirrels. She is on Tramadol 4X per day and Rimadyl 2X per day. For now, this is keeping her comfortable. Her appetite is good and she is very much "herself".
I have heard others mention Gabapentin. Is that a big help when it gets worse?
Keep the faith.
Ellie
Thanks Ellie! So sorry that you're going thru this with Indigo.
What kind of dosing schedule did your vet say you could use for the Rimadyl and Tramadol? When Sirocco was diagnosed with OS last July, our vet told us to give him a Tramadol whenever he seemed to be in pain. He agreed with us that quality of life was our only concern for Sirocco and that the risk of pain was far worse than the risk of side effects. Sirocco's OS was very aggressive. He had his biopsy on Friday and by Sunday morning, the tumor had doubled in size.
Edited to say: We went the pain control only route with Sirocco. I fixed him a strawberry shortcake every night. We fed him roast turkey, soft vegetables and potatoes, and whatever else he wanted. I have never regretted our decision even once. Even if his cancer had not been so aggressive, I would not have done the amp/chemo route. Sirocco was our separation anxiety boy and the trauma to him from being away from home was just not worth it. Sending lots of hugs. Any decision made out of love will be the right one.
He's on 75mg of Rimadyl 2x daily. The Tramadol says 1-50mg tablet every 12 hours, but that we can increase to a max of 2.75 tablets every 6 hours. He weighs 78#.
Thanks for sharing your experience with Sirocco.

Consider adding gabapentin to your drug protocol. I'm not judging by any means but, may I ask why no amp?
I'll have to call tomorrow and ask about the gabapentin. Thanks for the tip!
Thanks for asking about the amp so gently. It's something DH and I went back and forth on many times since we saw his ankle. We did consider it because it would eliminate his pain from the osteo. From what I was able to research, it is very pricey especially combined with radiation therapy, plus he would have recovery time from his surgery as well. And it seems that results are kind of a crap shoot. If there were a better probability of a positive outcome, or if the amp would totally remove the cancer from his body...

The Rimadyl was working - he had no limping at all until yesterday, when he limped just a little. Today he's limping a lot. And it appears larger today too. Had the vet prescribe Tramadol and we picked that up on Thursday. Thanks to those who suggested getting it right away and having it on hand, because we did give him one this morning (and just gave him another as the limping did not improve at all). I feel so bad for my boy, and I'm hoping that this second pill does the trick.
I did ask her if there was something more effective than the Rimadyl but she said there is a 10 day waiting period between drugs. ??? Is that due to liver issues?
This post appears to be from today--Sunday. Why can't you pick it up today? Tramadol can be purchased at ANY human pharmacy. I take it myself. You don't need to get it from your vet!
I'm so sorry to read about Alex.
Sorry I wasn't very clear - we do have the tramadol. Thanks to advice I received here, I had her prescribe and fill it right away so that we had it when we needed it.

Thanks for the clarification, Jey!
I just wish I would have had the foresight to choose the best pain medication to treat osteo right away. It breaks my heart to see him like this.

What a great photo! Alex looks amazingly like my Cindy! What is his racing name?
His racing name is Streakin Diablo.

A pic of my boy this morning. We've had this chair with all 8 of our greyhounds over the years. He is the first and only one to get up and sit/lay in it.

Keeping Beau in my thoughts and prayers.
P.S. Our Beau was also called "Beau Beau." Tho' my DH sometimes would mock me and call him "Bee-ewww Bee-ewww!." (rhymes with "pew")

Just got a call back from the vet. She says it's likely the ketoconazole causing his appetite change.
The good news: We can take him off of it. The tests came back negative for blastomycosis.
The bad news: The tests came back negative for blastomycosis. He has osteo.

He didn't want his breakfast yesterday. Thought it was because of his medication (ketoconazole) so DH picked it out. When I got up a 3 hours later (no, I'm not a complete sloth...he gets up for work and feeds them breakfast at 4a!) the bowl was still sitting there full with his Rimadyl laying on top. Took the pill over to him on his bed and he ate it, then came into the kitchen and ate breakfast. No feeding issues for lunch or dinner, and he got his dose of ketoconazole wrapped in little balls of bread so he swallowed them whole.
Today, no breakfast again. Dave did get the ketoconazole in him with our pill shoooter thingie. He wouldn't take his Rimadyl from my hand at all. At lunchtime, I got desperate and mixed in some turkey gravy and then after a few initial sniffs he gobbled it up.
Gonna call the vet and see if we should discontinue the ketoconazole. We noticed he has been really gassy too - not so much in the afternoon, but definitely at night, which coincides with his ketoconazole dosing.
This dog is not known for ignoring his food bowl, so it makes me nervous. Something is affecting his appetite.

It is heartbreaking when there's no clear cause. We had that with one of ours too.
You're in my thoughts and prayers! Keep us posted, okay?

Fingers crossed for a simple resolution.

I am so sorry to see this! Phene is in my prayers. Know that he is running pain free now! Sending hugs...
