    Recommendation for paw treatment product

    I see a lot of positive recommendations for Musher’s Secret,  but both of my current dogs literally bolt when they get a sniff (a pine-like scent) of that stuff.  They HATE it.  My Heart Girl at the Bridge wanted to eat it and “tolerated” it on her feet.   I guess some dogs might like it just fine.    
     

    Tender Paw has also been recommended to me.  It’s pH balanced for dogs and contains vitamins for healing.  But every single dog I’ve ever had loathes the smell (lemon).

    I don’t understand why they have to add fragrances to these sort of products.

    Clarify title

    hi everyone, 

    I have been feeding this food to my dog with severe IBD for probably 7 years ( with fresh venison and other healthy additions), and I was recently  caught off guard when I received a new bag and the formula had changed.  Even the Hills website doesn’t mention that the formula would be changing. And neither did Chewy, which is usually quite good about that.    There are enough small changes that it may require a thoughtful transition for a sensitive dog, so I figured I’d mention it here in case anyone else uses this food.

    My IBD dog gets like this when his IBD is bothering him.  Squelches, inappetence, nausea, obsessive grass eating, vomit, and usually stool issues a little later.

     It was SUPER bad before we got him diagnosed and on IBD meds.

    Hi Bizzibee-

    What’s going on with your dog?  

    Edit: sorry, I just saw in another thread that your dog had no “GI symptoms” but had weight loss, low folate, and low cobalamin, and that you had started a hydrolyzed diet last month, which caused worsening of stool.    

    Have you done any further testing or have you tried anything else?

    Glad she’s been better eating only the hydrolyzed food.  

    Metronidazole is an antibiotic, but it also has anti inflammatory properties.   I just meant that if the hydrolyzed food doesn’t continue to maintain things, you might consider the longer trial of metronidazole, as recommended by your vet.

    How’s your girl today?

    Among the other many things I’ve learned having traveled a long, hard, and actually totally worth it (worth it because we’ve had this time with our boy) journey with an IBD dog for the past 6.5 years, is that upper GI inflammation causes vomiting!  The fact that your dog has confirmed (biopsied) upper GI inflammation leads me to believe that its probably the upper GI inflammation that’s causing the vomiting.  

    Treating the inflammation will help control the vomiting. 

    It’s worth trying medical therapy if the hydrolyzed food isn’t controlling things well enough on its own.  

    I hope you figure out what works for your girl.  I think you will.

    Did she have GI biopsies when she was scoped?  Stomach, small intestine and large intestine? 

    If biopsies weren’t done, that’s what I’d suggest next.

    Just my opinion, but this sounds a lot like IBD (my dog has IBD). X-rays, ultrasound and standard blood tests can all be normal in a dog with IBD.  

    You might test  her blood protein/albumin (because of the weight loss), folate and  B12. But those can also be normal in a dog with IBD.  

     

     

     

     

     

    Gabapentin taper?

    Thanks Remolacha,

    The vet didn’t mention a taper either, it’s just that when you look it up, most websites say to taper it to prevent rebound pain and seizures. Perhaps that’s more applicable for animals taking it initially for seizure control?

    I’ll ask the vet at the follow-up, but I’m pretty sure she’ll recommend cold-turkey.
