  1. Just to consolidate medication sources that have been posted earlier, and in other locations:

Merck Safeguard (fenbendazole) -same ingredient as Panacur:

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000HHLVB8/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

This is a liquid suspension, for which you will need a measured syringe (usually free at a pharmacy if you ask politely for an oral medicine syringe [no needle])

Thanks, that is considerably less than what I am paying. I can do a three day course, three times on one bottle. The bottle says goats, but I see that others in the reviews are doing dogs too. Thank you for sharing this.

  2. I bought the concentrate and will use a hose end sprayer. What I really like about this product is that there is no down time after spraying. Kids and critters can re-enter the area right away. No need to water it in or avoid watering the area. It is safe for plants, domestic animals, humans and wildlife. It remains to be seen if the stuff really works. I'll try just about anything at this point.

I'm going to take a chance on this product as well. I have two separate fenced areas. each about 1000 square feet, So the 16oz should be good enough for 4 treatments on one yard. Cita is still testing a weak positive, so I am turning her out into a separate yard now and will use this to treat the boys' yard. If it seems to work, I will do the other yard as well. It's probably worthwhile even if it just treats for fleas ticks or other bugs. I'd rather treat the yard than the dogs, if I can do it safely.

  3. Chewy refunded me and told I could dispose of it. If I find another food that they sell, I would deal with them again. They were very responsive, first replacing the food, then refunding me. I didn't want to donate it in case this turns out to be bad food. Diamond didn't exactly fill me with confidence.

  4. I called Diamond, but the person on their phone said no change to formula, and asked for the batch number and date, which I didn't have because I threw the bag away. I wonder if they are trying to avoid another recall. It's hard enough to battle these damn hooks without having to dig up the yard to pick up runny poop.

The first person on the phone told me the same thing, but I was able to provide the production information from the bag, so they had someone from their vet staff call me back with the information on the formula change. I still haven't heard back from their quality control people. The last person I talked to was clearly more concerned about doing damage control than what happened to my dogs. I threw all the food in the garbage (4 bags), just in case there is more to this than just a formula change.

  5. We switched over to Advantage Multi from HG+ for the new hook protocol, but b0oth dogs ended up with some serious runs after the Advantage Multi treatment, which was the day after the third Panacur dose. Is this from the AdMulti? They were soft already due to the hook, but a couple of days after the Advantage I had to start picking up their poop buy cutting out the sod underneath with a shovel.

Quoted so you get the notification. I can't message you through the board.

It may not be the medication or the hooks causing your problems. See this thread about Diamond food:

    http://forum.greytalk.com/index.php/topic/322966-diamond-naturals-change/

  6.

Where can you find this info? I use Kirkland, which is made by Diamond, but I don't use the Kirkland Nature's Domain (which I think would be equivalent to Diamond Naturals). I use the regular adult formula, which would be the same as regular Diamond. I recently switched Percy from chicken to lamb, thinking the lower protein might help his poo, but it's been worse so I'm switching back to chicken. Now I'm wondering if they changed something.

Posting at the same time by the looks of things.

I spoke with a customer rep from Diamond at 1 800 442 0402 and gave them the production info from the bag. That rep said they didn't know of any changes to the recipe but would have someone from their vet staff call me back. A couple days later, I got a call (unknown caller) from Diamond who informed me that they did in fact make changes by adding yeast in September then upping it in December. They confirmed that my bags were with the new formula. They said someone else from product control would call me back (by today), but nothing yet. Honestly, they seemed more concerned about damage control than about my dogs.

The production info on the bag is printed black on a blue square that you need to kind of hold to the light on an angle to read. They need the Best by date, the numbers and letters after that, then the production code after that, and the numbers and letters after that -basically everything printed in the square.

  7. This change will affect Kirkland too, possibly, since it seems to be a rebranding of the Diamond. Possible also TOTW.

Some of us are on these foods and also dealing with hooks. making it hard to tell what is what.

I rapid shifted one dog to Iams and his issues cleared up immediately. Unfortunately he is the only dog I can do this with as the others needs to be shifted gradually and/or can't have corn in their food. i shifted them to the lamb and rice diamond, but still had issues, since, as I later found out from Diamond they made the change to that food as well.

So I am not sure if this formula change affects Kirkland or TOTW or Chicken Soup FT Soul foods either, or just the Diamond Naturals formulas, but thought that I would just give people a heads up.

As a side note. Chewy replaced a bag of food for free, then refunded me after confirming the formula change. They were very responsive. I would definitely deal with them again if I can settle on foods that they sell.

Alas, my dreams of three dogs on the same food seem to have come to an end for now.

  8. According to Diamond, they added yeast in September then upped it in December. Both my dogs reacted to the December change in formula.

They have an 800 number on the bag and a "Guarantee of Quality". If the expiration date is December 2018 or later, it will be the new formula.

At least it isn't another recall (yet. I hope).

  9. Due to a recent issue with food, and the somewhat less recent issue with the hooks, I brought in samples from all three dogs to rule out hooks. Both boys are clear and the female was a weak positive that they said could just be from even one adult hook laying eggs. Discussion with the vet lead to the suggestion of running a schedule of Advantage Multi, followed by three days of Panacur, repeated in three weeks, then tested again after another two to see if a third course is warranted.

He specifically asked if she was a prison dog (she isn't). He has three dogs from the same area prison program that can't shake the hooks.

  10. picked up new 4 1/2 yo male from Derby as a foster. September 2017 Was given a "hook:" deworming . Went to vetting within 2 weeks. Dental, neuter blood work... the works. After the food change soopy poop started. Fecal showed 4+ hooks. 1.2 ml Ivermectin, Advantage Multi topical and 5 days of Drontal powder on food. Repeat after 2 weeks. Still pos for hooks. Start another round and poop looking firmer. 3rd month still pos and 1 more round but following month test shows clear. Next month test shows clear. So after 5 months poop runny again and test is 5+. Group has 3 fosters in same shape. I know this is costing the rescue group a bunch of money and holding up adopters who are very patient. UF Vets are calling this a drug resistant hookworm infestation and looking into new drugs.

Wow. That's good of you to try to make sure the dogs are clear before adopting out. Not everyone would do that.
Not a good sign of things to come, if this is in fact a treatment resistant hook. I just got off the phone with the vet and he is going back to Panacur from Drontal, now saying that Drontal doesn't seem to be working anymore.
Have these dogs been anywhere outside of your property and do you have others in the house that have stayed clear through all this? Thanks.
  11. I'm starting to wonder if Lola's ongoing battle with hooks is not environmental so I've ordered a natural/organic yard treatment from here: http://www.wondercide.com/

    Check this out:

    https://blog.wondercide.com/hookworms/

I'll let you know how it goes.

I realize that it is still early, but have you treated yet? How is Lola doing?

I think I need to bring a sample in tomorrow. If she is positive again, I don't know what the heck is going on. She either didn't really get rid of them or my yard is now the problem. No indications with the other two yet. Side yard is back in service again.

  12. I wanted to leave a follow up reply here. Giving my sweet Frannie a little kibble before bed has stopped her rising early with an upset stomach. Thanks everyone. Of course her sister Chloe thinks this is a great idea, so we'll have to keep an eye on her svelte figure for her...

That's great. All of ours get a bedtime snack, but only one of them needs it. We just deduct the food from mealtime so it works out the same for the daily total.

It is also an incentive for no shenanigans on last outs, since they all want that bedtime snack. Quick business and all back in right away. If anyone dawdles, the others go get him.

  13. The other important question imo, which no one talks about is what treatment if any are these dogs getting at the track throughout their lives?

We have plenty of track/kennel people here. It would be good to hear from them as well.

  14. I also spoke with an acquaintance who adopted another prison dog from an earlier graduation date than mine, but from the same program. They also have been having a hell of a time with hooks since last summer. I know from speaking with the inmate trainer (I followed up with multiple trainers on multiple dogs for people when I was there), that this particular dog had to be dewormed multiple times while in the prison, and still all this time later, they are having issues. To me this doesn't sound environmental since that dog would have had hooks before, during and after its time in the prison. We had quite a few non prison dogs with hooks as well, that were just "treated and streeted". They all come from just a few of the same kennels.

    "treated and streeted"

I truly hope that we are not dealing with a "super-hook" then. The once and done approach definitely seems to not be working here anymore.

Your people must truly miss Bill, if you are with who i think you are with. He genuinely cared about the dogs.

  15. Who knows.

The big question, it would seem.

I like that we have several active cases on this thread, all comparing notes. As we start getting more successes and sustained successes, we can hopefully nail down a consistent treatment that works. If not, maybe it will point to a real need for a new medication.

i keep thinking back to NeylasMom's question about the kennels. If the routine distribution of monthly ivermectin and monthly to quarterly drontal as a matter of course to treat the symptoms isn't completely treating the problem, then we could be just cultivating a stronger, treatment resistant strain of hookworm, by essentially culling out the weak ones. This is how we have cultivated superbugs through the misuse of antibiotics, and pesticide resistant insects and herbicide resistant weeds through the misuse of pesticides and herbicides.

I have contacted people I know through my Aussie rescue network, as well as preservation breeders I am friends with. No one else seems to be having these problems to the scale that greyhounds seem to be having in this country. I thought maybe that the tough hooks were coming in with out of state dogs, but according to people in non-racing state greyhound rescues that I know, they are blaming the problem on Florida dogs.

  16.

He was open to the prison training regime, but on a three week cycle because it better matches the hook life cycle. I used Drontal on Saturday, but he suggested switching to Panacur starting three weeks from last Saturday for three courses of three days, 3 weeks apart. He said the switch to Advantage Multi would be ok, but didn't know if it would work better than HG+. He didn't think that the Advantage Multi has to be given at the same time, since the theory is that the effect has to build up to a steady state anyway. He is of the mind that a sufficient dose of Panacur is more effective than Drontal due to the three day course of treatment. He did recognize that there is an issue with hooks and greys that seems to be relatively new in the last year. He sees enough greys to have already noticed this. Overall, he didn't say much that was different from what your vet and vet friends have said, although he wasn't leaning toward environmental in this case.

In better news, we had a firm, blood free stool tonight.

So three courses of Drontal and then three of Panacur, while on HG+ and or Advantage Multi? Are you going to give the Advantage Multi every 2 weeks? With or without the HG+? Please keep us updated.

  17.

I'm sorry...I'm feeling dense right now...HG+ may be more effective than other products at keeping the dog hook free once she tests negative? But will not help if the dog is currently hook-positive? If this is the case, I will ask the vet to switch Lola from Trifexis to HG+ once we've got these pests under control.

I don't know that HG+ is better than everything else, but I know that I and others have had tremendous success with it and the generic versions of it for keeping hook free dogs hook free. The Advantage Multi sounds good too, but I don't know anything about trifexis. I know that the only time my dogs have ever picked up hookworm, is when they have been other products than HG+. With three greys, it also doesn't hurt that I can pick up generic HG+ for less than half of retail brand name for the same ingredient dosage. $40 every 4 months is better than $100.

  18. The other important question imo, which no one talks about is what treatment if any are these dogs getting at the track throughout their lives? IMO they should be on regular HG+ or similar for prevention, or are they and the preventatives aren't working as well either? Or are they giving them more intermittently which could possibly be contributing to a resistance problem? It seems like an important factor since this seems to be an issue with retired racing greyhounds in particular.

From what I understand from my dealings with the handlers is that the track dogs usually get generic ivermectin and a general dewormer on a routine schedule. Whether that schedule is maintained if they hold the dog while waiting for an adoption group is another issue. While this will prevent heartworm and knock out adult hooks and whips, it does nothing to break this larval leak cycle or prevent reinfestation. The local prison program in this area seems to be turning out its share of hook positive dogs as well, but that may have nothing to do with the prison and more to do with the dogs themselves.
