  1. My current veterinarian is retiring. They are a husband/wife team that has been practicing 39 years, and we have been taking our pets there my entire life (my dad first, now me). So I am now looking for a new vet for the first time ever.

There is a very large animal hospital (about two dozen vets) which is a 10 minute drive from my house, and I have taken Logan there a couple times for emergencies since they are a 24 hour/365 day evet. The seemed to be good, although perhaps expensive, so I'm thinking of going with them. Being a patient at a closeby evet seems like a good thing, with Logan being 13 years old now. That way in an emergency situation they have his records onhand, and as a large animal hospital I expect they have resources onhand that a sole practitioner vet would lack.

But OTOH mega-anything seems like it brings its own problem.. I assume we would generally get a different vet each visit, whereas my old vets got to know each dog well. There are a couple smaller vets nearby based only on Internet searching and looking at their websites, one that recently opened and is very close by but with more limited hours.

So I guess my question is, what should I be looking for? Are there any specific questions I should ask, or any red flags I should be alert for, in selecting a vet? Thoughts on whether a mega-animal hospital or sole proprieter vet is better? I understand this is probably unanswerable, but any thoughts or advice would be appreciated!

BTW, I'm on the westside of Cleveland (North Ridgeville/North Olmsted/Olmsted Falls area) on the offchance anyone is local and has specific suggestions :-)

Thanks in advance for any thoughts!

  2. I wonder if completely blocking the lower part of the sliding glass door would help. Not just a painter's tape "X", but completely blocked so no light gets through at all. He may be able to detect light/dark enough to recognize that, even though he cannot resolve the "X" which is not blocking much light at all. You could keep the upper part clear so you can look out, but he can't.

I also looked online and there is something called a "Halo" for blind dogs (https://www.muffinshalo.com/), but at greyhound speeds that would not give enough warning. I was hoping to see some sort of LIDAR sensor that might output an alarm based on speed and at a longer distance (like the collision detector on modern vehicles), but did not see anything in a quick search.

  3. Logan has been with me for 10 years today, so I figured I would post a few pictures from this morning. He is doing good, now at 13. Yesterday morning he went on almost a 2 mile walk, but this morning he went only about a quarter mile before getting scared back home by some construction noise in the distance. It was maybe a half mile away, but he is getting shook by certain types of sounds nowadays, especially loud engines and bangs. He got rotisserie chicken on his food this morning, I have been picking those up at the store occasionally and putting a small handful of chicken (without the skin) on his dry food, add water and it is like chicken soup.

Some blurry shots of him in the living room after the walk, upset that I stopped petting him for a few seconds to take his picture:

If I can I will try uploading more tonight after getting home from work.

    Thanks for looking!

  4. Heat sensitivity is a thing with a lot of greyhounds, which you might not expect given their thin coat and low body fat. My Logan has always been heat sensitive, even in the low 70's. I adopted him in May, and one of the first times we went for a walk, just around the block (about a mile), halfway through he crashed on a treelawn, totally flat and not moving. He was only 3 at the time. I was trying to figure out how I would explain to the adoption agency I killed him in less than a week - but then he eventually got up and finished the walk. Max, on the other hand, always liked walking anytime, and he would start barking at Logan to get moving when Logan would lie down from the heat.

Best thing I have found is late night walks, after dark, which might be 10 pm or later this time of year. Logan enjoys them, and fortunately I live in a safe neighborhood and enjoy stargazing so it works out. Early morning is the other option but I'm not a morning person.

  5. Logan is 13 today. He is doing well, though definitely slowing down, with good days and slower days. A couple pics from after his morning walk. This was a slower day, he only went across the street, did his business, and came back in.

Unfortunately I had to go to work today (writing this in the office), but hopefully will do something special over the weekend.

  6. Update: He's back home! He got the vaccine boosters, but the vet said his teeth look ok and agreed it makes no sense to do a dental. He was shaking like a leaf at the vet's office, but fortunately did not realize we were there until after he went through the front door :-)  He finished his breakfast about 20 minutes after returning home, so I don't think he can be too stressed. I asked about rabies, and his next booster would be due at age 16, so I don't think he will be getting that again.

  7. Hi, just wanted to get some pre-checkup advice. Logan has his annual checkup tomorrow (Monday) afternoon.. I have not seen any issues with him, but, he will be turning 13 on April 7th.

First question. The vet's reminder email indicated he is due for the DA2PP booster, and LEPTO booster. I am not ant-vax and cost is fortunately not an issue, so my thinking is to have him given both boosters,  but I suppose any vaccination puts some stress on the dog so I wanted to check if there is any good reason to skip one or both of the two boosters. In terms of possible exposure, he does walk every day, occasionally in the park.

Second question. I also expect the vet may recommend a dental cleaning. I hate to have him put under for a dental at his age, but on the other hand I don't want him to have mouth pain (no evidence of it right now in his behavior). My thinking is to just go with whatever the vet advises, but any thoughts on this would be welcome.

Third question. Anything I should specifically ask the vet about? He is currently only on the low dose of Vetprofen, one pill each morning, and I think that does help with his arthritis.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts/advice on the above!

  8. With the cold snap (down to -3 deg F as the high here in Cleveland), I was worried about how Logan would do. He never does his business in the nice fenced-in backyard, insisting on going on walks, and even then he has to go up to 1/2 mile before he finds a "worthy" spot. Also, he never barks. I've had him 9 1/2 years, never heard him bark. So if he holds it all day and can't get through the night, I expected a mess in the house.

But, he's adjusted. He has been doing both #1 and #2 in the backyard, even doing both on the same one-minute outing. And most amazing, Christmas morning at 6 am he came to my bedroom door and barked to be let out. Just one bark, but an actual bark,  not a whine. So, I guess old dogs can learn new tricks, at least under extreme duress :-)

  9. I have been cooking ground turkey for Logan in the mornings for ages, but it has been hard to find lately, I guess due to supply chain issues. So a couple weeks ago I picked up one of those precooked rotisserie chickens they have at the grocery store. Logan *loved* it, so now I am adding that to his food. It's fast and actually not that expensive since I only put a small handful of the meat on his kibble, then add warm water to create instant rotisserie gravy. The chicken lasts the better part of a week in the refrigerator. I suppose it is not the healthiest additive, but he *really* does love it, and as he is closing in on 13 yo I figure whatever makes him happy :-)

  10. Logan has been with me for 9 1/2 years on Friday May 18. He came home May 18, 2013. I was doing the math, we have been together for 10 summers and 10 autumns now. (It is no longer "autumn" here in Cleveland, regardless of what the calendar says). Sorry for the late post, but I figured I would belatedly put up a few pictures from last Friday.

Here he is with a couple treats I gave him:

I guess he wasn't too happy with the gravy bone.

Then he went for a ride. He has finally adapted ot the Ford Escape I got a couple months ago, though he still doesn't seem totally pleased with it.

He is definitely slowing down (12 yr 7 mo now), on a good day he may get a couple miles in over three walks, on a slow day under a mile. But he still enjoys his walks, and going to get a pup cup at the local coffee shop. And does the occasional zoomie in the living room.

Last photo is from about a month ago, to make up for my poor photography above :-)
