  1. Best/fastest for identification purposes are collar with tags - I like Boomerang tags https://www.boomerangtags.com/collartags/ My dogs' tags have my address and two phone numbers. Additional tags can be your adoption group, town license, rabies, etc. but your phone # should always be on them.

Microchips are great if someone gets your dog to a vet or shelter to have them scanned - and always make sure your contact info is up to date.

Ear tattoos are a good (but last) option for IDing.

For real time tracking, Air Tags are okay, but not ideal. GPS collars will give you the most up to date location. I use Link https://www.linkmypet.com/ and we have to charge it every couple of days. There is also Whistle, Fi and a lot of others out there.

  2. My Theo has had 3 negative tests (monthly) but I'm confused as to when the tests should be done. We tested 3 weeks post treatment (Advantage Multi + Drontal). I hope we can now switch to just AM, the Drontal made him so sick and he hated it :( I need to talk to the vet - she has read Dr. Ng's article and is open to learning more - anything else I should mention to her? I want to keep him clear of course, but would love to get him off the Drontal.

Also, has anyone switched to Simparica Trio after 3 negatives? I am considering this med in place of AM & Frontline.

do i have the only dog who went totally naked from the velvet?

and the other dog slipped it- yup, on tight and a porta-john truck came barreling down the aisle we were set up at in Brimfield Antique Show. Annie took off  full steam ahead thru all the vendor's tents and aisles to rt 20. she was found in a yard 4+ miles away. thank dog she made a left turn into a residential neighborhood vs. straight to rt90.

and even with 50 years of canine ownership i still can't manage 2 leads on one dog and another dog at the same time and have full control.

    hence my feelings about harnesses.

Regarding the velvet, my most recent greyhound seemed to have sensitivity to a velvet tag collar, but that was on 24/7. I've never had one have sensitivity to it on the harness because they don't wear it for that long.

And you don't need two leashes - there are many alternatives to attaching a harness and martingale using one leash. 2Hounds sells one that has two attachments with one handle,  but it is too short for my liking. Houndstown makes an excellent one with two attachments and one handle. I use a coupler to attach them and then use my regular leash. I wish I could post a picture but GT won't allow me to :(

  4. My favorite is the Freedom No-Pull Harness from 2Hounds Design. They were originally made to fit a greyhound, have a martingale tightening feature, and soft velvet under the arms. I also attach a coupler from the harness to my dog's martingale collar for added security should he slip out of one.

There is a FB group, Getting Rid of Parasites in Retired Racing Greyhounds. Drs. Ng and Castro post the latest info.  Read the briefs section.  The drug is Profender, and is used topically in cats, orally in greys.  My Pippin just had 2 negs after two years of Advantage Multi, then Drontal 2 weeks later.  I"ll test him again next week, and if he is still neg. I'll stop the Drontal but continue the AM for life.  If he is positive, I'll be doing the Profender.

Yes, if you are on Facebook be sure to join the group https://www.facebook.com/groups/829551573866770 for the most up to date protocols

  6. Our Razzy who we just lost at age 13 also suffered from this - and we believe it was Sundowner's Syndrome. At the same time every day (around 4pm) she would start shaking and panting and pacing, it was heartbreaking. We initially thought the shaking was pain related so she did take some meds, and had arthritis too, but ultimately we couldn't see her go through that anymore and let her go :( It is heartbreaking for sure.

  7. I used to have a Forester and now have a Chevy Equinox which is about the same size. I have tried many things since I am also a dog walker and have a lot of different types of dogs in and out of my car. The best I have found so far is this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07NC4PNKX?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2_dt_b_product_details

It is like a hammock, but with a more solid base. I still put cushions in the foot wells for more stability because my new boy weighs almost 80 lbs. and stands up  a lot in the car.

Two dogs that get along well fit in the back seat. However, when I had two greyhounds I did one in the backseat and one in the way back.

  8. There is a lot of good advice here. I love what you said, "Time4ANap". We just adopted our 6th greyhound and he is a total sweetheart & lovebug - likes hugs, kisses & cuddling. However, we have had a couple of growls/snaps recently and we have had to remind ourselves everything is still new to him, he is not the same as our previous dogs, and we also should leave him alone in his crate (he goes in there on his own while we are home). These are greyt reminders for everyone, whether your on your fist greyhound or your sixth (or 20th - lol!).

  9. The Houndstown Safety Harness is the best I have used for a spook - it has the extra third strap around the waist, and you can get a leash from them with a double snap, so you can attach it to the harness and collar as a back up. For a general harness for greyhounds, the 2Hounds Freedom No-Pull Harness is my favorite. They also have the double snap leash.

You can also use a coupler to attach his harness and collar together, with the idea that if he slips one, he would still be attached to the other.

  10. Musher's Secret which is used to protect paw pads in the winter can also help in the summer for hot pavement (but best to avoid hot pavement altogether if you can).

Check collars, leashes & harnesses for fit, wear and tear. Add a carabiner clip to your leash as a backup should the hardware fail or get stuck on something.
