  1. Thank you all for your support. This is not an easy part of the boards to come to, and I'd been avoiding it the last few months in particular, especially the last 2 weeks. I do appreciate the support and it's just helpful to have a place to say 'this hurts'. I'm lucky to have people around me who understand, and a wonderful vet that made things peaceful.

  2. I don't have much to say...Her thirteenth birthday is the day after tomorrow and a month ago I thought we were home free and we'd have a teenager. On April first we noticed a bump, hard as a rock and very tender...and got her X-rays--totally consistent with osteo. They had to give her a little sedation for the films to get the angles to see it properly (it was on her shoulder blade) and while woozy they tried an aspiration. It wasn't enough to say 'it's osteo' but it certainly wasn't an abscess and what they saw had malignant features. She's been having trouble with her hind end and given the location, her age and how unsteady she already was, well, comfort care was the choice.

Yesterday I came home from work (I leave town Friday night and come back Sunday night every other week) and she tried so hard to greet me at the door. She almost fell down--her back end was even weaker because she'd been limping much more just over the weekend. The lump has tripled in size almost in 2 weeks. This morning she just looked at me and was done. She couldn't get comfy on her bed and was just too tired out. I always said I'd rather let her go a day early than a day late... but I'm pretty sure it was just the right day.

I'm glad I made it home and I am super glad we have a wonderful vet office. Our regular vet doesn't work Mondays so her partner came to our house in the middle of the morning and let her go to sleep on her own bed without an awful car ride. My dear, sweet Jackie...not the brightest bulb but the absolute sweetest and best dog ever.

  3. I always loved the Sequoia pictures--such a happy dog! She is one of the first dogs I remembered by name/picture when I signed up here, and she always brought a smile to my face...I'm so sorry for your loss :(.

  4. I'm glad you posted this, and for all the replies especially what Hawthorn wrote.

Yesterday I barely walked into Jackie's nose (nothing that hasn't been done before) and she gave a mini GSOD. Sometime between afternoon and dinner she suddenly could barely walk though she pottied okay, ate everything with gusto etc.

Last week she had been limping a little--DH took her to the vet and 'everything checked out' (my husband's words). Several weeks ago she had given me a little yelp during 'neck rubbies'...but yesterday morning she was running around like a 6 year old. By bedtime she looked like she was going on 13 (she is almost 11 but would never know it).

In any case, today (I barely made it to the end of the appointment) she now has the dx of either a 'pinched nerve' or a herniated disc in her neck. Before I got there apparently one of the exam maneuvers included the neck range of motion and poor Jackie shreiked.

Without an MRI it's hard to say for sure but I'm glad I happened to read this thread...it gave a good piece of information for the vet to figure out what was going on. I was worried about a stroke or osteo otherwise (I was VERY worried last week with the limping), and though this is not a happy thing for Jackie hopefully she'll improve or at least be managed.

Tramadol, Rimadyl and leash potties only for a week...but the nose pain was a good clue.

  6. Oh gosh, I can't think of anything to say...but she looked so happy and was getting so much love. I was checking out the picture of her standing with her brother, how her leg was all mixed with his, so sweet. Thank you for taking care of her....

  7. Thank you for the input! mmm Cowboy Cookout for breakfast and Wilderness Blend for dinner!

I may have to get a couple of smaller bags of other flavors too--how can you resist names like Grammy's Pot Pie or Campfire Trout Feast? I suppose I am projecting, but it seems like she would enjoy variety. Well, if I do get the new flavors, those I will go slow with. She did NOT like the Senior one and trying to sleep next to her at night after TurDucken.... :puke Now that was gas!

    Thanks :)
