  1. Leo's home. He looks awful, but that's because everything is shaved and stitched properly and his wound is draining. He ate the half dinner the vet said he could have and seems fine and relaxed. Definitely a lesson in go with your gut, I'm glad I didn't let the evet sedate him and I'm glad I had our vet redo the procedure, I think this would have been bad if we'd left it the way it was. Thank you all for your support, as always.

  2. Jeepers, all that, and without a clue about how he did it. Greyhounds are the quirkiest! Hope your good boy is doing better. FWIW, Paddy had a negative reaction with Buprenex, we will not administer that again. Good healing thoughts for Leo! :grouphug

I know and not a peep out of him till we got to the evet. When I quicked him once, I think everyone in a 30 mile radius heard him screaming.

  3. Now I'm relieved and really mad. My vet just called, she got the wound all cleaned out with a drain in and sutured in two layers. But what I thought was a small scrape on his mouth, that the e-vet said she cleaned and looked at, turned out to be a puncture all the way through the lip that needed a suture on the interior and exterior. It should heal just fine now, but seriously. At least there's another e-vet basically the same distance away for 3 am emergencies if we need it.

  4. I took him in this morning, our vet was not thrilled with the state of the repair. She said it would probably heal okay, or we could sedate him and use a local and redo it. Since one of the issues is there's hair in the wound, I went ahead and am having her redo it properly. They also dosed the opiate higher than necessary, since it turns out he's had it before at a lower dose without problems, I'm glad I didn't have them sedate him since they probably would have screwed that up as well.

I feel like crap though. I didn't realize our vet had instituted emergency on-call in the evenings. I'm not sure if they didn't tell me or if they told me and with all of my health problems last year I didn't remember, but we could have avoided all this since she was the one on-call at the practice last night. My poor baby.

  5. Last night wasn't great, but it wasn't nearly as bad as when Patrick had an opiate reaction, so I'm thinking it may have been just Leo's anxiety about the whole thing. So far so good with the wound, and he is on an antibiotic. The evet said recheck in 10-14 days to remove staples, but I'm thinking tomorrow just to be safe (assuming things are okay today) and then again later.

  6. We find it helpful to calmly capture a few photos of wounds that a hound isn't comfortable allowing close examination at home.

View and zoom in on photos on a large computer screen to inspect much more clearly.

We photograph dry paw pads, and then wet paw pads for best viewing results.

Photos may be forwarded to your vet, and are helpful to evaluate healing progress.

That's a great idea, thanks for sharing.

  7. Leo got hurt, no idea how, in the yard. It's a largely shallow, open wound on the shoulder, but it had a small pocket. The options were sedation and drain, or close it and antibiotics. They were busy and the vet seemed distracted and didn't want to talk to me about choice of sedatives. So we had it closed, and I'm going to have our vet recheck it. I'm also second guessing letting her give him Buprenex, I wasn't sure, DH thought it was okay. He seemed relaxed after the shot, but now he's panting and won't eat. But he freaks out over everything anyway and refuses to eat at the drop of a hat. So I don't know. Thoughts?

I had planned on having him rechecked on Thursday, assuming there's no sign of infection, but I'm wondering if I should him evaluated by my vet in the morning about putting in a drain. I'm fine with her sedating him, she's done it before and I know she'll take care of him.

  8. I am stunned! She hasn't even started the meloxicam yet! First dose of that will be tomorrow morning. Just with the one dose of gabapentin a day, she's a totally different dog. Doesn't seem to have a sedation effect yet. She's ready to party! Hasn't let me have much rest this weekend! ☺️

AtticusMom thank you! Sounds like cold lazer therapy might in our future. I didn't know they could combine with acupuncture.

Great news! I can't say for sure it was the cold laser therapy that helped Leo because we were also doing massage and physical therapy, but he did get a lot of relief right after starting it.

  9. I'm so, so sorry for everyone who's had a less than peaceful euthanasia. Murphy's passing took forever because the vet was inexperienced (new to home hospice) and significantly under dosed him on the second drug. But, here's the important part, I can't say for sure with Brendon, but often what's very delayed or upsetting to us doesn't mean our beloved animal suffered and from what I was able to read, Murphy didn't. I have been present at one where the vet really did mess up (a rabbit) so I know how hard that is.

  10. What are your opinions on us being with him while they are doing these vaccinations, blood draw & nail clipping? We have the option of having it done in the exam room with us, or they can take him to the back room. I wonder if he'd be better without us there, but on the other hand, having us there if he has a relatively decent experience might be good? What do you all think?

It so depends, a lot of the time they're much better behaved for someone other than mom and dad, but a really fearful dog I'd probably try with you in the room first and leave if that's not working.

  11. That's a possibility, but she gets the pred (5 tablets) with a cheese snack around 12:30 and the tramodol (1 capsule) in the evening after her last walk, again with cheese.

Prednisone in the dosages needed for Lymphoma can make them starving, I had my boy on 4 meals a day and snacks by the end. How much Tramadol? You do want to make sure she's not in pain.

  12. Thanks. The issue here is that I cannot take him to regular therapy appointments which is why I must resort to meds. Chiro works but I can't take him regularly.

I was thinking if you could get him there once, you could learn the exercises and stretching to do at home. I think that's what's really causing Leo's progress, I'm not convinced the cold laser is helping that much.

  13. Leo has this, recently diagnosed. We're working with a rehab vet, so we're doing physical therapy at home, massage and stretching at home, and massage, stretching, & cold laser therapy at the vet's office. We also have Meloxicam as needed, but we've basically stopped since staring physical therapy (we were using it every day). So far (1 week) we're seeing a lot of improvement.

  14. That makes me happy to hear, maybe Zeppy will take the same route, he definitely does the same jump in the air and try and run bit!! I will look into meet and greets with other greyhounds, I know my agency has them, the last one was at a dog park for "doggie-palooza" and so I was a little nervous how he would be with all the other breeds, but I like the idea of him seeing how other greys react with other breeds.

M&Gs have helped Leo a lot, because he gets to see other breeds (our weekly one's are at a dog friendly farmer's market), but he can do so with the safety of an entire pack of greyhounds to back him up.

  15. Seeing them scared is frustrating and hard to deal with. Fortunately, it sounds like Zeppelin's fears are relatively mild so an obedience class may be helpful (fear aggression is an entirely different beast, but even that you can make a lot of progress on). I would consider his overall stress load--can you reasonably limit his exposure to other dogs outside of class for a while if need be to help make sure he's not getting overwhelmed and he has a chance to regroup between classes, or is that not feasible given your living situation? I know you're avoiding other dogs on walks, but it may help to avoid walking in places where he'll encounter other dogs for a while. Or, by summer he may be doing much better, two months isn't that long. And if you can find a class with larger dogs, that might help--it seems like fear of other breeds is worst with small dogs (or maybe that's just my experiences).

  16. Good thoughts for Ryder on Friday, think of us on Tuesday please, Henry and Leo both go in. Are circumstances are similar, both boys really only need a light cleaning except for the back teeth, which really do need to be cleaned deeply. Leo has picked up a limp that Meloxicam is treating but not resolving. I don't remember how old Ryder is, but our vet suggested taking Leo to a vet that specializes in physical therapy, among other options. He's a bit young for daily Meloxicam if we can avoid it, and she thinks that if physical therapy works we can learn exercises to do with him at home daily--is that a possibility for you? She also suggested a consult with an orthopedic surgeon as an alternative, but I'd prefer to start with some less invasive remedies. She also suggested we ask about cold laser therapy--I don't know enough about it yet to know how frequently that needs to be done.
