  1. I checked that link to GPNova--mine doesn't look like that one.

Mine has a long green plastic handle that curves around to the side, like this:

Anyone who has picked up a trimmer from GPNova, which picture does it look like? I wonder if that's the "small" version.

We got ours from GPA-NoVA. It's the large one that looks like yours. They could just be using whatever picture they could copy. I'd call or e-mail them to ask if you are concerned.

  2. We've had Celeste since April 2006. When we took her to the vet a few months ago for her annual exam. We were told she didn't need a dental at all this year. Our vet used to work near a dog track and has seen her fair share of greys. She said that Celeste must have inherited the "good teeth" genes because her teeth looked greyt. We don't feed raw either - just kibble and for snacks they get Greenies, bully sticks or pigs ears.

ETA... our vets office does free dental screenings during dental health month (February/March - they spread it over two months). The vet looks at your pets teeth - free of charge - and lets you know if you need to schedule a dental or not. You should check if your vets office does something like this.

  3. :welcome2

DH and I adopted both our greys through GPA-NoVA. We adopted ICU Celeste (Celeste) in April 2006 and Darcy (D's Zipperfoot) in December 2006. DH was there with Celeste when the pics were taken on May 12. I've heard wonderful things about Okie - greyt news that he found his way to your home. What an adorable matched set you have now!!!

  4. It's greyt that you could find out more of Boue's history!

We were fortunate to find out why Celeste was retired from her breeder/racing owner. It has nothing to do with an injury... just turned out that Celeste was just not very interested in racing. We wish we knew more about why Darcy was retired. We didn't have any luck contacting her breeder/racing owner. We suspect she was retired due to grading off (she was nearly 5 y/o), but it would be nice to know for sure if that was the reason.

  5. This seems like it should be a question for your vet. I know with horses that it's recommended to do injections weekly for a month before switching to once per month. Adequan has been a miracle drug for my friend's 36 y/o horse. After the initial series, she's been giving him injections as needed - usually about every 3-4 weeks. Too bad the stuff costs so darn much.

  6. :welcome2 DH and I adopted our first greyhound, Celeste, last April. We adopted our second grey, Darcy, in December. We have three indoor cats and didn't have a fenced yard either. Neither was a problem.

Celeste was tested and classified as "cat-safe" by the adoption kennel. We had some concerns at first, but were able to work through them. We had a designated "cat only" area that was blocked off with a babygate. We also supervised Celeste's interactions with the cats and taught her "no kitty" when she got too focused. I'm happy to say all worked out - Celeste basically ignores the cats now. Things were much easier with our 2nd grey, Darcy. Darcy basically took her cues from Celeste when it came to the cats. I bet things will be easier for you too considering you already have a dog and cat living together.

As for energy levels, exercise, etc... our two greys are L-A-Z-Y. Celeste probably spends about 22 hours per day sleeping. Darcy has a bit more energy, but not much. Our greys definitely sleep more than any of our three cats. We take our girls out on 3-4 walks (1/2 mile to 1 mile) per day. We did fence our yard last October with a 5' picket style fence, but prefer taking the girls out on walks. They really only go running in the yard about once a week.

Here are two excellent books that everyone considering a greyhound should get:

In closing... greyhounds make GREYT pets! DH and I just adore our two grey girls.

  7. Glad to hear that Beau is home... don't worry about his behavior right now. My horse had many days where she was upset with me after I had to place her on stall rest due to a ligament injury. However, I think her injury has actually brought us closer together. She is actually happy to see me most days now.

  8. Our greys stay upstairs with access to our bedroom and office while we are at work. We can't give them free access to the entire house for various reasons. Unfortunately, those also happen to be the warmest rooms in the house. We set our AC to 74 during the day, but it probably doesn't get that cool upstairs. We also leave our celing fan on all day. Setting yours to 76 would probably be OK - I agree that 80 sounds a bit too stuffy. We also used to leave ours on higher temps. while we were at work, but that all changed when we got our greys.

  9. That price sounds about right for my area (Northern VA). We just paid about $550 to get our cat's teeth cleaned plus one extraction. This was during "dental health" month, so the price was discounted. If they charge that for a cat, I'm sure a greyhound would be in the $800 range. Luckily, neither of our greys needed dentals this year.

  10. DH and I bought the VPI Superior Plan for both of our grey girls in February. Celeste's (3 y/o) annual premium is $228. Darcy's (6 y/o) annual premium is $291. We chose to pay for the entire year at once - cheaper than monthly installments.

A month later, Celeste bit Darcy's face in the yard resulting in a couple of staples/stitches. The total vet bill was $265. I submitted a claim to VPI and received back $145. Sure... it won't cover everything, but we got 1/2 of Darcy's annual premium paid for with that one claim.

We got the policies for peace of mind. Although you hope to never use it, at least we won't go broke if one of our greys need expensive treatments. We've been very pleased with VPI thus far. It's great if you can put away money into a savings account, but DH and I have never been particularly disciplined about saving for a rainy day.

ETA... I also have insurance on my horse through Great American. It's been GREAT! I pay about $500 per year. My mare tore a ligament about a week after I renewed my policy. They've covered all her treatments at 100% for a grand total thus far of over $2,000. I've only into my 2nd year on the policy and it's already paid for itself 2x over.

  11. Anyway, I just got a letter from them last week (we applied in November) They want to know where her vet records are for the past four years. WHAT? She's a retired racer do you expect me to go to Seabrook and get this info? So I am now going to call them back and explain what she did the last four years of her life. IDIOTS.

Huh? I just got VPI for our two girls. Celeste is 3 y/o and Darcy is 6 y/o. They didn't even ask for records on Celeste. They did ask for Darcy's records for the past 12 months. We've only had her two months. So, I sent them our adoption contract and the information from her first (and only) vet visit after we adopted her. They sent us the policy soon after. No problems...
