  1. So sorry that you lost Lucky so soon. I certainly know what you are going through. But he was "lucky" to have had his time with you in a home. Sometimes the shortest times are the sweetest. Run pain free dear boy.

  2. I just saw your post and certainly understand what you are going through. So many others have described their loses here too. Losing our beloved hounds is certainly harder than we could ever imagine. My husband and I adopted our first greyhound in the early 1990s. Cody was our first greyhound and he brought something into our lives I've never experienced before even though I had dogs all my life. When we lost him to IBD on February 18, 2002, I thought I lost a part of myself with him. I don't have to look that date up. It's in my heart and each year I remember and think about him and miss him on the anniversary of his death. I knew at the time that I could NEVER let this pain happen again and decided that I could not ever have another dog that would replace Cody. My vet called one morning a few weeks after we lost Cody to tell me that a greyhound adoption group was having a meet and greet near us. He told me that he knew how we felt but that he felt he should at least give us the option of talking to them. He said something very important that I think back on: he said that each person must grieve in their own way and take the time they need to work through their grief. Only I would know what is best for me. My husband and I talked about it and we went to that meet and greet. I met the woman who had two sweet brindle boys looking for a home. I could not even think about it. The pain was too raw. We talked for awhile and I took a business card.

Later that week, I just picked up the card and called the woman I met at the meet and greet. I told her that there was no way that I would EVER want to adopt another greyhound. But why did I call her? By the time I got off the phone, I had agreed to foster the two boys I had met at the meet and greet. This started off slowly. My husband and I fostered at least ten dogs for this group. We could not allow ourselves to betray Cody's memory. Then in August 2002 a sweet five year old black male named Valentino came to our house. He never left. That year Cassie, Ford and Ajay also stayed.

In 2005, my husband and I founded our own greyhound adoption group. Three hundred dogs later, my Cody is still my love. He always will be, although he nows shares a spot in my heart with our bridge hounds Ford, Valentino, Apache, Craiger, Keisha and Kenny. Cody started us on the path we now travel.

Each dog has brought something so special into our lives. And I feel that what we are doing honors their memories.

I know this pain is raw and you are hurting. Please feel free to call me any time. And tears are permitted and even expected.

P.S. There are a lot of hounds here that really LOVE being hugged!!!

  3. :f_red We understand how you feel. We also lost one only after having him for two weeks. But it was so worth it to have loved him and have him here with us. She was loved and cherished while she was with you. Although you couldn't have her longer, what you gave her was what she needed and it was good that she was with you.
  4. :f_red First of all, I'd like to send my deepest sympathy to you and empathy for the loss you are feeling. I know how you feel. But to me (and I'm sure Casey), you are a hero. Thank you for taking in a senior dog and giving that dog your love for the time she had left. Since dogs live in the moment, the last moments of her life were spent in the company of someone who loved her very much. Thank you for the time well spent with a dog that only knew love while she was with you. She will occupy that special place in your heart that she deserves. And you will be a better human because you loved her.
  5. :f_red So sorry that you lost Annie. But the fact that she lived so long speaks to your love and care for her. We should all be so blessed that we can leave this life without fear or pain, cradled in the arms of people who love us. Rest in peace and love sweet girl.
  6. Linda, just seeing this now and I'm heartbroken over learning about Isis. But I know how very much she was loved and cherished and what a wonderful home she had with you. She is running pain free at the bridge and knows how much she was loved. So sorry she left so soon.

  7. Hotdog was a very special hound; he was a sweet boy. He was also a happy boy because he was so fortunate to have you there. He lived a good life around people who cared for him up until the end. Godspeed Hotdog; you will have so many friends at the bridge!!!!

  8. Don't know what we would do without them here! A few days ago, all the muzzles got scrubbed, labeled, and each dog got his/her own poop guard. We've had a few try to shove their muzzle into poop, but like what Jillysfullhouse said, they give up once they realize they are not getting anywhere.

  9. We are all heading out tomorrow to pick up Sweet T. Her adopters are coming with us along with Silver, their handsome (and spoiled) male that was adopted earlier. Sweet T and Silver are from the same farm and they were together in the kennel. Sweet T's adopters are wonderful wonderful people who have had greyhounds for many years and will give Sweet T the most wonderful home. They have fostered a lot of the "hard" cases over the years and they certainly know the ropes when it comes to providing a greyhound a perfect home.

Please say a special prayer for Sweet T, for Belinda and Ray who did so much to make sure that Sweet T got the best care (and saved her life) and for us all who are SO looking forward to this special trip. We will post photos when we get back.

Thanks to all who kept the vigil.

  10. When Teddy gets really excited, he jumps up at me. This morning he almost knocked me off my feet. He is under 2 years, was never raced or trained to race. I don't have much history on him since he was turned in the the city pound in August. He does know sit and I have tried using sit with treats and he will obey but as soon as he gets the treat, he starts jumping at me again. I have turning sidways and tried the ignore method but he just jumps on my back. He is now 70 pounds and has almost knocked me down a coupld of times. The only time he does it is when we wake up in the morning, when I arrive home from somewhere or when I am getting ready to feed. I looked up jumping on the search and have also look up training methods from trainers on line. Teddy is a sweet, happy, goofy puppy. He walks well on a leash, is lovable and the only issues I have with him are the jumping and nipping. I would love to have some suggestions on training him not to jump on me. This doesn't seem to be as much of a problem for greys that have been trained to race but it is pretty obvious that Teddy was not trained as a puppy at all and is probably why he ended up being turned in to the pound. He is also not a very soft hearted sensitive type dog and doesn't seem to get his feelings hurt. He is just a big goof. Thanks for any advise you can give me.

How well we know this one! We have had a lot of the jumpers/nippers come through here. Some are harder to teach than others. We usually use a word command (like BAH!) to suggest that this behavior is not good. We turn our backs and wait until the jumping stops. When it is quiet, we say "Good boy/girl" and reward with a treat. This is done in a different tone of voice, much higher and positive compared to the BAH word which is loud and direct). I can say with certainty that once you start the training, it will get worse before it gets better. Just keep doing the same thing each time and don't lose patience. We had one dog that was a kennel favorite and he was encouraged to jump up on his trainer/care taker. It took us a long time to change the behavior but it did work. He was placed in a home with a very experienced adopter and they still sometimes have to "remind" him that this behavior is not OK. I think the trick to this is not to lose patience, keep up with the repetative training, and eventually it should do some good.

  11. Small update: Sweet T is doing Ok and we are all hoping that she is going to continue to do well. Many thanks to Belinda and Ray for caring so much about this sweet girl. They have gone above and beyond to get her the best care, to drive back and forth many times to the vet with food and to visit. Here's a photo of her before her last surgery. She is lying on her pink blanket that her adopters sent her. It's still with her and we hope that she will go home with it. Let's hope the next photo will be her going home! Thanks so much for all the prayers, good thoughts and well wishes.

  12. Such beautiful pups. I'm so sorry about your loss of Macey. Sending hugs for you and healing white light for Wilbur. I'm glad to hear that he came through the surgery well. I hope that his recovery goes as well.

So sorry to hear of such an awful day. Macey was a sweetheart; love her photo. Hoping Wilbur gets well soon! Black hounds are my heart throb!

  13. Sweet T will be coming to our group if she recovers. We have a wonderful adopter who has been waiting for her and we all hope and pray that she makes it though this crisis as she will have a wonderful and loving forever home. Our group will pay for the Amicare (as well as shipping) if it is available and is shipped to 8 Greyt Greys (Belinda). Please continue to keep this sweet girl in your thoughts and prayers; she is so close to her forever home!

  14. We constantly deal with this in our group. We get the panicky calls about creatinine levels all the time. A long time ago (we got our first greyhound in 1991) the "normal" creatinine level on the charts was 1.9 and then for some reason it was lowered to 1.6. As long as the BUN level is OK, don't worry. One of my females constantly has a 2.1 creatinine level. It's normal for her.
