Guest katieandpadfoot
My boy Padfoot was diagnosed with begging stages of kidney failure at 6. The Dr put him in Purina NF. I'm trying to figure out is there anything else I can do for him to slow down the process...I know I can't stop it. I do know there is a home cooked meal too. They talked about putting him on meds...but they said the meds are no longer made. Also if you have had a grey with kidney failure...what is life expectancy like? Thanks so much Padfoot's momma
tbhounds
Might sound like a silly question but, are you sure your hound has renal disease? Diagnosing hounds with renal disease is a common mistake made by a lot of veterinarians as hounds have higher renal values. http://ckm.osu.edu/sitetool/sites/greyhoundpublic/documents/FAQ/KidneyFailure.pdf
JJNg
I second tbhound's response. With a greyhound, the first thing is to make sure the diagnosis is correct before proceeding further. Is your vet aware that greyhounds normally have slightly higher kidney levels than other dogs? What were his actual bloodwork numbers for BUN and creatinine? What is his urine specific gravity from a first morning urine sample? duncan41
Vets are very quick to dx kidney disease/failure without looking deeper. What tests were done to come to this conclusion? Since there are several areas of the kidney that can be affected, it is important to "name it". I have one that is in her 12th month post diagnosis. Please pm me if you need help or would be interested more info on food and supportive care. JerseyGirlInOz
I agree with the above---make sure the diagnosis is correct, and get a baseline of his levels so you know if there is CKD and how advanced it is. My Hailey was diagnosed with late stage CKD in early October (it was confirmed by an internal specialist who did a battery of bloodwork, cultures and an ultrasound). There is lots of good advice in the thread I posted back then. I had originally had her on prescription food and she was not a fan, so I put her a combination of homemade food, supplements and Chinese herbs, and it has made a HUGE difference. PM me if you want more info. Quote "Hurricane Sandi" (Baurna to Run). Forever missing my "Angel-With-A Crooked-Halo" Hailey, and "Mokkah" (Xpress Point) with all my heart. Guest KatyC
Hello, I am in the same situation with my parents falt coated retrivier. He has jjust been diagnosed, so I have been trying to read up about it and also posted on here for advice. From what I have read there are various supplementas that may help. Azodyl is a mix of probiotics that I keep reading about. I have also read that parsley and honey infusion with water can help. Also phosphorus binders. But I would call your vet and ask them about things like this and if he has any sugggestions as well Some peoples dogs have lasted years with kidney failure and some just weeks it seems. So I think it all depends on the severity of the failure and the dog and a bit of luck as well. I hope padfoot stays healthy and happy for as long as possible Is he named from harry potter? Keep me updated i'd be interested to hear how he gets on and if you find anything that works well for him. Katy
