Mystery Limp

Tarmac has a mystery limp that seems to be defying diagnosis. He spent most of the day at the vets getting poked and prodded, x-rayed and tested for Lyme. Aside from possible swelling on his knee, refusing to let his foot touch the ground and a tendency to howl when anyone other than me lays hands on him, nothing appears wrong. The vet sent us home with tramadol and gabapentin with instructions to have him checked out again in a week, or sooner if there's no improvement. I'm hoping the meds help, because he seems to be in a lot of pain. He's limped before if he overdid it running or cut a foot, but he's usually pretty stoic. What could this be? A different tick borne illness? Pinched nerve? The vet had suspected a torn ligament or osteo, but it doesn't seem to be either of those. Any suggestions on other things we might check for?

When Sunny had a mystery limp which our regular vet couldn't diagnose it turned out to be a problem in his neck just between his shoulder blades. A second (greyhound) vet diagnosed it in a matter of minutes and we subsequently took him to a chiropractor for treatment.

It is very hard to say. Sometimes the cause is not where you think it ought to be and if there is nothing obviously amiss with the knee, it is worth looking at the shoulders, neck and spine. The main thing is whether the medication fixes the pain.

A belated thanks for the replies. We just went to the vet again, and she is now fairly certain it is a cruciate ligament tear. We are going to follow up with an orthopedic surgeon. Pain medication is helping a bit, but Tarmac is still having a lot of trouble getting around.
