Guest 2greysinPA Posted July 24, 2009 Share Posted July 24, 2009 (edited) We just found out that our yard has 'rust fungus' on it... We had no idea what rust fungus was until this week. When you walk thru the yard with sneakers or bare feet .. you would end up with a powdery substance on your shoes or your skin.. it was gross... at first we thought it was pollen.. and when it wouldnt go away... we did some research and found it to be 'rust fungus'.. treatable with a bag of turf builder from Lowe's. My Questions is ... Does anyone know if Turfbuilder is safe to use in the yard with pets and children? Obviously i want to get rid of this fungus, but i dont want anyone to get sick either. Guest kydie Posted July 24, 2009 Share Posted July 24, 2009 Hi have read your thread a few times, I live in western Pa. and nver had this issue, but where I live nothing grows much here, we are lucky if it gets 76degrees here, something in the turff builder must kill this, I think a county agent could, narrow it down to the exact thing, and maybe that would make you feel better, and you could use the specific thing on your lawn, I know how you feel, I don't use any type of chemicals on my lawn either, Good Luck Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Ortho (under the Scotts brand) makes all kinds of stuff- Turf Builder with Summer Guard, Turf Builder Plus 2 Weed Control, Turf Builder with Halts Crabgrass Preventer, etc. Their regular stuff- nothing kinky- is urea-based fertilizer, no herbicides or pesticides added: http://householdproducts.nlm.nih.gov/cgi-b...amp;id=19026008 I would qualify that as being safe for animals. Turf Builder Plus 2, OTOH, has 2,4-D in it, which is generally recognized as being a carcinogen in pets. http://win14.american.edu/safety/au/vault/000/000275.PDF So- I'd have to know which brand you're talking about. Guest Energy11 Posted July 24, 2009 Share Posted July 24, 2009 I think the local Cooperative Extention Service/County Agent, could tell you what to use that is safe for getting rid of the "rust fungus ... ugh!" and what would be safe for the animals. Ours directed me to the Safter products, which I have used for the spiders under the house and other pests :-( http://www.saferbrand.com/ Good Luck! There's nothing special about TurfBuilder itself- it's just an urea-based prilled fertilizer. Urea's nice and cheap, as it comes from (surprise!) urine. I suppose they have to make it on an industrial scale these days, and skip the urine, although I honestly don't know.
