Sunscreen?

We keep hearing that we should be putting sunscreen on our dog, but have no idea how or what kind to use? We have a boat, so at least on the weekends, he's out in the sun quite a bit.

Just looking for some suggestions or experiences from people who have used sunscreen on their dogs.

Orion has had some health issues recently, including a tentative diagnosis of lupus (biopsy inconclusive but that's another thread) so we have been ordered to use sunscreen on him on any areas not fully covered by fur. For us that's his nose, tips of his ears and a shaved patch on his side until the fur grows in. The vet told us to use a baby suncreen but said any brand should work. We are using a spray on version, I think Coppertone Water Babies, that comes in a pink bottle and the vet said it was fine. We have the lotion, too but it's much easier to spray on the bare skin.

We also have a white and blue and his belly and legs get pink if he's in the sun too long. If we know he's going to be outside for a while we'll just slather some lotion on our hands and rub it over his belly and legs. A couple of vigorous rubs and it's all worked in. Works better than the spray since we have to work through some fur.

I have two white greyhounds and I try to keep them out of the sun as far as possible, particularly between 11 and 3. If I do have to take them in the sun I use baby sun lotion liberally on their noses, thighs and chest and down their legs where the fur is thin. I wash it off once we get home. I have also used the lotions specifically made for dogs but they come in such small bottles, here in the UK at least, that they don't last very long, which is why I prefer the baby lotions.
