Guest Greensleeves
Well, my mommy's instinct was dead on, and we took a urine sample in for Jasmine this morning. Turns out she was having trouble peeing. Doc was a little rushed on the phone when I called (I knew it was surgical hour, but I just expected to talk to the techs!), but he found lots of red blood cells in her urine, and said this was characteristic of inflammation. I can't remember if he said he saw bacteria in there or not. He's putting her on antibiotics for the next howeverlong, and wants to do another urine check, pulled directly from the bladder, when that course is finished. He said something (??) indicates that her body isn't showing the proper immune response to the infection--either because we caught it really early, because it's really low-grade... or because she may have polyps. He didn't want to get into that, but did say that if he doesn't like what he sees in her urine at the next check, he'd turn her over to the internal medicine specialists, to do an ultrasound to look for polyps. I did ask if that might account for the recurrent nature of her bladder infections, and he said it definitely could. I couldn't tell if he was sounding concerned or rushed (and I'm going to assume the latter). I'm just hoping the GTers will have some good information, until I can speak with him again! (When we were looking polyps up online, we found some scary references to bladder cancer/TCC, but Doc didn't say *anything* about that, so...???) I think I'm garbling some of this a little. I probably should have had DH call, b/c I've just been diagnosed with severe anemia, and the hypoxia makes it hard to think... but DH is dealing with the insurance people and the body shop from the car accident we were in on Saturday!! This really hasn't been the greatest couple of days for our household. Anyway, I will be combing through this forum for information, but since UTI is unsearchable, I thought I'd ask for thoughts straightaway. We appreciate anything anyone can tell us! Thanks!! robinw
i have lots of experience with this, thanks to Loca. it might be a good idea to ask the vet to do a urine culture to see if Jasmine has a bacterial infection, also. "Severe Anemia, causing hypoxia!?!" ARE YOU OKAY, REALLY!!??? Were YOU in that motor vehicle crash??? Sounds severe on YOUR part, too! A LOT of things could be causing the recurrent bladder infections ... all of what you said. I'd just relax, IF you can, and let them CULTURE the urine and see what they get back. DO ask the vet to CULTURE the urine... COULD just be a VERY nasty, resistant infection! TAKE CARE OF BOTH OF YOU!
Guest SoulsMom
Polyps? That's what caught my attention . . . when Archie was 8 he showed blood in his urine, but not bacteria. So we did an ultrasound and it showed his bladder was full of these ugly, ugly masses. They originally thought cancer, but when he had surgery it turned out to be polyps caused by bladder stones. He had a 1/3 of his bladder removed and aside from some 'leakage' issues the first year he has been fine ever since. He did go on the U/D diet for awhile, but only for about a year or two.
