Guest LokisMom
Cole has some significant weakness and shaking in his hind end. The vet thinks it might be pain related so we started Cole on Previcox this evening. He is 10 years old and has only been with us since March so I am not sure how long the weakness has been going on. Anyway, since not long after he took the medicine, he has been zonked out! I mean very out. He did get up to potty but then went right back to bed. He hasn't even come over to me for scritches all evening and normally he stops by a few times. I can't call the vet until morning when they open to find out if this is an expected side effect so I thought I would ask GTers. It seems like Gters know a little bit about everything. So anybody know if this is normal? And if he is in pain, is it better for him to be sleepy and personality-less than in pain? Is it maybe too high a dose? Am I just an overly concerned mommy? My Kixie took Previcox for her arthritus. She took it for about two years and didn't seem to sleep a lot, no more than on the Rimadyl... until it stopped working, nor the Deramaxx... until it stopped working. Previcox is supposed to be more gentle on the system than the others... Do you suppose he just doesn't hurt - for the first time in a long time and he is catching up on his sleep? I would call the vet in the morning. Does he seem to be breathing OK?? Has your vet been pretty good about prescribing medication correctly for greys in the past? Guest LokisMom
He is breathing okay. Our vet is pretty grey savvy and even owns greys himself so I tend to trust his opinion. I do however, think I may have blamed the medicine when he was actually just sad. His daddy worked last night and wasn't home which is not a normal thing in the evenings. Cole just happened to perk up and start acting normal as soon as DBF arrived home. Apparently I am not good enough.
Guest whatahound
I have a almost 15 year old black lab that is on Previcox. He has done very well on it. No side effects that we have noticed.
Guest SusanP
Our old girl Simon used to take it for arthritis. It never seemed to bother her or make her sleepy, but it helped the arthritis a little. Simon did have tremors in her lower jaw and hind end. The vet said it could be because of low thyroid, tested her, and did put her on thyroid meds. But a week later she had a strokelike event and we ended up sending her to the bridge. If the hind-end shaking doesn't clear up with pain relief, do pursue it.

His legs shook as bad if not worse on the thyroid meds than they do now. It is so frustrating trying to do what is best for them when you don't know what's best. Guest HornGreys
I knew of a greyhound here that all of a sudden lost him back and and was on deaths door. This poor boy I believe was only 6 years old when it happened. He had no movement in his back end. After running many test and x-rays our greyhound vet contacted a specialist and asked what he could do. Nothing came up in any of his blood work and nothing showed in his x-rays. They put him on a regement of Previcox as they believed that it was from pain but didn't know where. I don't remember any side affects of the drug. But it worked. This boy went from deaths door and not being able to use his back end to now if you look at him you would never know. I don't remember how long he was on it but, in this case it did work. If you have any questions you can pm me and I can get incontact with the owner for more information. Good luck with Cole

Guest BradyzMommy
As with other NSAIDS, there is always a risk. The important thing is to be aware of it and look for any signs that may point to a problem. Although death is a risk, it happens to only a handful of dogs. Some of the warning signs: Vomiting Diarrhea, black, tarry or bloody stools Change in drinking or urination Change in behavior, such as depression or restlessness Yellowing of gums, skin or whites of eyes It's important that your vet check bloodwork to be sure that damage is not being caused by the Previcox. I learned all of this the hard way. We started giving Brady Previcox in March and by May we had lost him. Guest LynnM
It has the same effects and possible, though rare adverse effects of any other NSAID. If it doesn't give good relief of his symptoms with minimal side effects, there are many other meds to try. Previcox does have the advantage of being the easiest one to dose, if that's something that's important to you. Lynn

Guest SusanP
I did not mean to suggest that Simon's stroke-like event had anything to do with the meds she was on, only that shaking/tremors are something that a vet should be consulted about. We assumed Simon's tremors were due to age/arthritis/weakness. The vet decided in the end it was probably something neurological. She never had any problems we were aware of on Previcox, and she was on it a year or two.
Guest greytexplorer
bumping for an update on Cole How's he doing? Can you tell if the Previ is working for him? Mandy takes 1/2 tablet of Previcox 227 mg every day for arthritis. It has made a huge difference for her. She's been taking it regularly for a year. hugs, ~Pat
Guest LokisMom
Well, he's not acting weird and zonked out any more so I don't know what his deal was that night. *shrugs* Who knows with these guys sometimes. His legs are not shaking as much but he still walks stiff on his right back leg. I don't know if that will eventually go away or if he will always be stiff. I am encouraged by the lack of shaking. Yesterday he had a very big day and no shaking at all. He even ran around my dad's acre back yard a bit. Not as much as the young pups but he did run and we've rarely seen him run or play so I think that was a good sign. I just wish the stiffness would go away also.
