Guest boondog
I know that osteo isn't always visible in x-rays in the early stages. If osteo is suspected, but not apparent from the initial x-rays, when is the next set taken? Is there a recommended time or does it depend on the dog's symptoms? iluvgreys
In my experience with OS where the initial x-ray was inconclusive, the repeat x-rays were scheduled between 2 to 4 weeks later. You can certainly be more aggressive... see a specialist and have a better caliber of x-ray taken, or have a radiologist read the x-ray or pursue a needle biopsy or regular biopsy (very painful). OS is an aggressive cancer and will usually show itself by the swelling response of the surrounding tissue and pain with weight bearing. Guest HeatherDemps
Not exactly sure since when we had the x-rays done, the vet was pretty sure it was osteo. They were not digital x-rays. When we went to the university to meet with an oncologist, they took better quality x-rays and initially, the radiologist didn't see it, but then did confirm it was likely osteo. As the OP said, they can be sent to a specialist who might be able to confirm earlier on than others.
