Still wet behind the ears

Still wet behind the ears (3/9)

  1. Hey all. Brand new dog parent here looking for some general advice on dents care. Not that I’ve found anything wrong with my grey’s test yet. Been using some dental chews that my vet gave me and she loves them. Was also advised to brush her teeth often. Any advice on how often to brush her teeth, toothbrush or chew recommendations? Or any other dental recommendations? Maybe there’s another thread someone can point me to? I figured this might be such a broad topic, I got a lot of results from tying teeth or dental on the search.
  2. Hey all I need new advice. it’s always difficult to get my grey out of bed. Usually I’m able to just pick her up. But now she growls at me when I try. I read that if they growl that it’s just communication and i should just do what i can to make her more comfortable. But she needs to go outside for potty. At first I started luring her out with treats. But she’s very smart. Now I have to leave the room for her to even consider going for the treats. And as soon as I get back in the room she goes back into her crate or bed. Which makes me feel like I’m rewarding her for just sleeping in her bed. I suppose I can let her use the pee pads if she needs to go potty since I don’t have a backyard. But I don’t want to always rely on that. I know that I need to be patient since I’ve only had her for just over a month. But this sudden new growling habit has me concerned. She’s seemed to be adjusting to me and my apartment just fine otherwise. But now nothing seems to be working to get her out of bed. Any advice would be helpful.
  3. Hey all! Thanks for the great advice! Just an update. I’m using the harness now along with the slip lead. I also have a new martingale collar in the mail soon. She freezes a bit more, but not so long. I do have another question though. When it comes to the martingale collar, what is the proper position for it? Right behind the ears, at the bottom of the neck, somewhere else?
  4. But with the harness and martingale she completely stops and I have trouble getting her to move again because she ignores treats when outside. The slip lead works most of the time for at so far. I’m just worried it might be uncomfortable or hurting her without me knowing
  5. Hey all. I have a new greyhound. Been with me for just over a month now. She often stops during walks. I went to get help from the local trainers and they gave me a slip lead instead of her double lead/harness/martingale collar. It did work for a while. But now she's started freezing again. And I was wondering if maybe she doesn't like the slip lead anymore? Once when we were at the vet she was trying to pull away and she started biting it. Is it because it's hurting her? I'm not doing anything different than what I did at the beginning. Does anyone else have concerns with using a slip lead for stopping dogs or is this normal?
  6. Also, she was just at the vet 2 days ago and I gave them a fecal sample. So, if it is the worms, maybe it’ll show up there
  7. So, if it wasn’t a change in food, I reintroduce her main kibble 1/4 cup at a time instead of a bland diet? And bring her to the vet if it continues after I start reintroducing it to her? And if it continues throughout the 24 hours should I take her to the vet? So far it’s been about 12-13 hours and she just had diarrhea for the 3rd time
  8. Hey all. My new 3 year old t HD at I adopted a couple weeks ago had diarrhea for the first time and I was wondering if I could get some insight on how you feed your dogs if they get it. I’ve been recommended fasting for a day, then feeding her boiled chicken and rice a few times a day until it gets better. Maybe adding chicken purée to it. And take her to the vet if it continues for 2 or 3 days. What would you guys recommend? I’m a first time owner so this is new to me Sorry, meant pumpkin purée.
  9. I try to take her out every 5-6 hours. She does go potty each time. She’s pretty good when it comes to avoiding accidents. I’ve only had one so far and it as because she held it for well over 12 hours. She really just sleeps most of the time
  10. So, here’s an update. I’ve been carrying her out the door for potty. And I still struggle to get her out of bed, The issue isn’t about getting her to trust me to go on walks, it’s getting her outside for potty. She’s fine as soon as we get in to my elevator to get outside my building. But getting her to get out of bed so I can pick her up is a bit of a struggle. She’s not reacting to treats. She doesn’t tell me when she needs to go. I’ve been trying to get her out around the same time every day, but if she doesn’t go, she holds it for a long time. She sleeps most of the day, but still gets up for food. But I’ve been told I should wait by about 30 minutes after she eats because they have to go potty soon after. So the main issues now are: 1. Treat’s aren’t enough to get her out of bed. 2. She sometimes ends up holding it for up to 12 hours and I don’t think that’s healthy. Also, I don’t know if it’s common for a greyhound to not need to go if she sleeps all day
  11. I unfortunately don’t have a yard. I have to take her out of the apartment building. There are other dog walkers in my building, I can try asking them. I let her wear the harness and double lead/leash all day yesterday. Going to keep doing that today. A friend told me I could just hang out in front of my open door with her leash on to get her used to it. Or play desensitize recordings. When it comes to the first few days, I keep getting different and opinions on whether I should give her time to adjust and get used to me, or immediately establishing myself as alpha and keep her on a strict schedule
  12. Hi everyone! I just adopted a beautiful 3 year old Greyhound a few days ago! She’s super shy and was told I would be the perfect fit for her since I work from home. Just wanted some advice since I’m getting all sorts of different answers from different people and I thought I could ask here as well. First, I have a bit of trouble getting her to go outside. I put a treat down to get her to stand up so I can put her harness on. But then she freezes. I have the double lead attached to the harness and mandible collar. I can tug on the leash to get her to move or stand back up, but I worry that it’ll hurt her. Is it better to carry her? If it is, what’s the best way to pick her up when she’s lying on her side? Second, I was told I should give her treats as positive reinforcement during our walks, but she doesn’t seems too scared of everything to take them. I live in a slightly more urban area. Even though I live in a very quiet area, there’s still a lot she’s afraid of. Whenever I try to give her treats when she behaves well, she doesn’t take it. She tries to avoid my hand. I try throwing the treat on the ground but she doesn’t take that either. Should I give her better treats or should I just be more patient?
