Still wet behind the ears

Still wet behind the ears (3/9)

  1. Hi! Yes he has his own dog bed right next to hers - he just chooses to lay on top of her on hers. we’ve tried to swap out the beds incase he didn’t like them but it seems to have nothing to do with that sadly 😭
  2. Hi Friends! I recently adopted a second greyhound (about a month or two ago) named Roy and we love him dearly. He’s 2.5 and wasn’t very fond of the racetracks - hence his early retirement. He is sweet and affectionate. Our first girl, Ollie, was a successful racer of 4.5 years and is the dominate one - a bit less affectionate, alpha type. For the most part, they know their place. Roy likes to sleep on the couch and Ollie prefers her own space in her dog bed. However, nearly every night lately, Roy will wake up in the middle of the night walk to Ollie’s dog bed and lay right on top of her! (as you can imagine, Ollie is not too fond of this) she will bark and growl, understandably so, to get him off. Often times he doesn’t listen and if he does, he’ll repeat this behavior the next night. Im unsure what to do besides maybe trying crates for both of them or her at least? She sleeps great without one (when her brother isn’t lying on her face that is, lol) so Id hate to force her in one. Wondering if anyone has experience with this. Just nervous since this behavior has been happening for over a month. Is it still early days? Thanks ! ☺️
  3. That is great to hear! All these responses are making me feel a lot better about it. I know people who don't have greyhounds will say it's 'cruel' to have two large dogs in an apartment, but what do they know I guess. We do 5 walks a day, beach trips, park trails etc. so she gets outside and gets to explore good amount. Other than that, she just wants to plop and sleep. We have savings set aside for vet visits as well, already had to deal with some nasty hookworms! We'll do some play dates with greys her age and see if we can find her a housemate. Thank you all!
  4. Thank you all! I appreciate the advice and perspective. Mainly worried about them feeling “crammed” in an apartment, but we keep things tidy and have a lot of open space intentionally. I’ll crunch some numbers and make sure it works for us financially before jumping into anything (:
  5. Hi! I’ve been thinking about adopting a second greyhound to keep my current only greyhound girl company. While I do think she’s a fine only dog, I feel like she’d be happier overall with a second one (maybe that’s just me talking myself into it LOL). For context, we live in a 2 bed 2 bath apartment, around 1,100 sq ft. There’s a balcony that they can lay out on. First floor. We’re active and go on 5 walks a day. Would love any advice/thoughts. Thank you!
  6. Hi Friends! My girl grey Ollie goes in and out of phases of being verryyy stubborn on her walks. She gets fixated with things, right now, it's my car. I park on the same street each morning, she tugs me down that street, sniffs every car along the way, and stops dead in her tracks when she finds my car. She refuses to move, continue walking etc. after she's found it. She goes completely frozen. Not even treats will get her to budge (unless it's a piece of steak, had to resort to that). Even if I move my car to another street, she'll still tug me down the street to try to find it. Although it is very adorable that she loves my car + car rides so much, I'm wondering if there's a fix to this so I don't have to bring chunks of steak on my walk each time Appreciate any advice/insight!
  7. Wow that's a great idea putting a bag right under! Definitely will be trying that on her lunch walk. Glad to know she's not the only one who does her business in random places - thanks everyone
  8. Thank you! She is coming from Caliente track in Tijuana, we live in SoCal - so relatively similar climates. I'll try to give her a Benadryl and see if that helps, will keep brushing her - she loves it! I'll look into the grain-free food article, she's eating Open Farms which we've heard is a really good one - but I guess we can never be too careful. Thanks for sharing
  9. Hi! My new grey, Ollie, is ~4 days off of the track. She is superrr itchy and has flakes of dry skin everywhere. She's already gotten her flea medication, is on a grain-free good quality kibble (we give her a mix of kibble and raw meat), and is taking fish oils to help her coat. She has been roaching + playing with toys so we think all is well regarding her comfort level (as good as it can be on day 4). I'm just worried about how much she scratches herself, sometimes she'll whimper because she's so itchy. Is this dry of skin common after the track? Any ways to give her any sort of immediate relief?
  10. Hi All! My sweet grey girl, Ollie, is 3 days off of the track and is adapting to couch potato life very well so far. She's been roaching, playing with toys and walking relatively well on leash. She has no problem peeing on the grass during our walks, but she will only poop on the sidewalk. The sidewalk is directly next to the grass areas where she pees, so she actively makes her way to the sidewalk to poo haha. I've tried to do a gentle re-direct to the grass when she starts to squat, but as expected, that takes her out of her zone, so she stops altogether. Anyone else's greys do this? Just not loving leaving stains on our neighbors sidewalks!
