We have just moved to a new house with a converted basement that gives access to our garden. I already knew my grey did not like going down stairs from our previous house but thought I would be able to train him.
He has proved me wrong and I am really struggling to get to walk down stairs. He walks up them fine and has walked down them on a few occasions. On the occasions he has gone down the stairs he has been attached to a lead via his harness. He is very scared and stands still at the top for ages. He also tries to jump the stairs instead of taking them one at a time. Usually he refuses to go down at all.
I would not try this without a lead/harness yet because of the jump risk. He is not interested in treats to encourage him to walk down the stairs, not even high value ones. Toys don’t work either.
Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
