  1. Thanks for your reply macoduck.

its a big pee, he’s not drinking more than usual and doesn’t pee in his sleep. They did a culture and they said it was all ok. Forgot to mention too in the original post that he also had an ultrasound on his bladder and that was clear too.

I’m a little worried that it’s becoming a habit rather than an medical/ age related issue.

Would you have any tips to break this?

    thanks again

  2. Hi all,

I'm after some advice. Our (nearly) 12 year old, Billy, has started having the odd accident indoors.

we have had a visit to the vet and had a urine test and blood tests to see if there is any underlying cause but both tests came back clear, for all intents and purposes he is healthy which is a huge relief.

He has started having the accidents, mainly, in the mornings. He doesn’t do stairs so he used to give me a quick bark and I would come down to feed him/ let him out for his bathroom routine.

Now don’t get me wrong, I understand that he isn’t getting any younger and that accidents might happen with age but it kinda seems a bit too sudden and too frequent to be that? I don’t know.

The past couple of nights I have slept downstairs with him and he has slept through without incident, then last night I thought I would see how he goes and slept upstairs again, and you guessed it, another accident. The frustrating part is that he had his accident at 4:45 and then barked for his breakfast at 5:00. I don’t understand why he isn’t barking to let me know he needs the bathroom.

I don’t suppose anyone has any advice for me? I don’t really know what I’m asking, just at a bit of a loss that’s all.

    Thanks for reading my ramblings!

Like Don, I would suspect a change in the food, or his treats, if *nothing* else has changed.

Though the manufacturing company is unlikely to tell you the truth about if they've had to change their formulation or not.  Here in the states, there aren't any rules regulating ingredients for dog foods - they can sub or change things as they wish as long as minimal standards of quality are met - so commercial foods actually change quite frequently.  A popular Purina variety was switched up about 18 months ago, without telling anyone, and so many dogs had issues resulting from whatever they changed!!

But it's also possible that dogs develop an allergy or intolerance to an ingredient over time.  If you can't find out anything about a recipe change, you might try switching him for a short time to a home cooked bland diet (a low fat protein different from what's in his current food, and a low fat carb source like pasta or overcooked rice) to see if that makes a difference in his emissions.  ;)   Also something to talk about with your vet if it persists.

    Hey thanks for replying!

I’m starting to suspect that it could be down to a recipe change in his food.

managed to get a small bag of something else today so we’re going to slowly wean him onto the new stuff and see how he goes but yeah definitely will be mentioning it at the vets!

Grace has periods when she tries and fumigates all and sundry with an SBD (Silent But Deadly) and unfortunately she seems to save her most pungent emissions when visiting friends especially in the evenings. I think she gets over excited.

I have thought about putting something in her food bowl to slow her eating down so she doesn't gulp down to much air but haven't got round to it yet.

Oh yeah don’t get me wrong, he loves to stink the place up, especially with visitors present, even more so if they are sat tail end! Hahaha!

I don’t think it’s necessarily that he’s gulping food down too quick but as I said, we do have a scheduled vets visit so I’ll mention it and see what is said.

    thanks for your reply!

You might check with the company that makes the food to see if they've made a recent change.  Given all of the supply chain issues around the world, it's  possible that they've changed an ingredient, or sourced an ingedient from a different place, causing a change to the food. That assumes that everything else is good and you have not seen any bloody stools or diarrhea to indicate that something else is going on.

    Good luck!

That’s a really good point! It hasn't even crossed my mind that they may have changed the recipe recently!

Definitely nothing else going on, stools are normal, no diarrhoea or anything like that, just lots of stinky farts 😂

Will 100% be looking to see if I can find out if they have changed anything though, thanks!

  6. Hi all,

Our Billy has recently been getting more and more gassy!

Now, he’s always had a bit of wind from time to time but recently it’s got a lot worse, and well, sorry to sound gross but he stinks! Haha!

We’ve had him 4 years now, he was a dogs trust rescue and we got him he was on wainwrights turkey and rice. We’ve kept him on the same food since then without any issue until recently.

His poops have been normal and without change so we’re not really sure what’s going on.

We wondered if we should maybe think about switching foods or something?

We are taking him to the vets soon for his annual vaccinations and we’re going to ask them about it but just wondered if anyone had any advice or suggestions in the mean time?

    thanks in advance!!

Get x-rays.  Any leg swelling in older greyhounds would be a cause for concern.

    Thanks MaryJane,

yeah that’s the next step if the swelling continues or goes (with the antibiotics) and comes back.

We’re keeping a very close eye on it, I’m taking pictures daily to track it lol

    thanks again

I’m wondering why he’s been given antibiotics instead of anti inflammatory medication. Does he have a temperature too? Do they suspect an infection? Presumably the vet checked him over thoroughly for cuts and broken nails or bones. Buddy (also 10) had a swollen toe earlier in the year which caused a limp, but even if we had decided not to walk him, we couldn’t stop his zoomies around the garden, so I would probably keep on walking him as normal but keep a close eye on it. Take him back to the vet if it hasn’t gone down in the next couple of days.

    Hi Merseygrey

he has been on an anti-inflammatory too, sorry forgot to mention this in my original message. The vet did do a thorough exam and there’s no obvious sign of injury but we’re keeping an eye on it. Thanks

felix was always injuring his paws. one time he managed to puncture it w/ a piece of tall grass/straw. the vet inserted itchamochal(a black drawing salve) in the puncture and squeezed the med and wound a couple of times and the puncture was re-injected (syringe with out the needle) daily for a week. the salve really pulled the infection out- NO ANTIBIOTICS! if you can't find the site then soaking 2 to 3xs in Epsom's Salts will help draw out the crud. not a compress, literally sick the paw in a container of warm salts and wait 10 min. years ago one was able to get packets of Massengil Douche- that too will pull the debris out of an inflamed paw.

if your dog is 10 years old he has not been on the track for most of his life no way can this be a racing injury. this is possibly glass, some other debris or a small foreign object. watch and stay in contact w/ your vet.

    Thanks Cleptogray,

great advice about the Epsom’s salts, we will get some and definitely do this to aid the recovery.

We suspect at this point it was a puncture injury like what you have mentioned so yeah we will keep an eye on it and will definitely be back to the vet if there is any change

Did the vet take X-rays? There could be a fracture or other injury.

    Hi,

the vet didn’t take X-rays yet, she wanted to see if he would respond to the antibiotics first. She did a good investigation of his paw and leg and there are no obvious signs of injury or fracture (he doesn’t cry or pull away when the paw is touch and manipulated)

Pro/anti racing comments are not allowed on Greytalk.

Rjelly, yes to moderate walks and rest. Any chance this was a spider bite? You may or may not see the actual bite site, but there would be swelling and eventually some fluid leaking.  Did your vet mention applying ice?  Otherwise, bellyrubs while he's in a roaching position with feet in the air could drain with the swelling.

I don’t know if it was a spider bite, we can’t see any obvious puncture or wound to the paw and definitely no leakage of any sort. The vet didn’t mention putting ice on it but he’s been doing loads better for the last day or so, the swelling is almost completely gone and he’s back to his normal self!

They are so often over raced, rest him somewhat, but a short walk might help

    Thank you for the advice!

he still wants to go for his normal walks and once he’s up and about he does stop limping so much. I don’t think he’s in loads of pain based on how he is when he is up but yeah just wanted to see what would be best for him.

    Thanks again

  13. Hi all, just after a little advice...

Our 10 year old Billy has a swollen paw. We took him to the vet yesterday and he’s been prescribed a high dose of antibiotics to help. So far we’ve not seen much change but he’s only had 3 doses so I think it’s early days.

I just wanted to ask, should we be resting him or is it ok for him to do some short walks? This is our first time with this condition so any info would be great.

    Thanks in advance

    Ryan

  14. Thanks for your reply Macoduck.

she wasn’t leaning over him, she was at his level but not over him as such. He definitely hadn’t fallen asleep, he was wide awake when I said hi to him and had been in the garden before she greeted him. No he definitely doesn’t have any hearing loss either. It’s just a really strange situation.

We’re in the UK so I don’t know if the rules reporting things are the same but thanks for the heads up in case they are.

  15. Hi all,

we've had our grey Billy for 2.5 years now, he’s 9 years old and has truly settled amazingly into our home and lives. We’ve had no issues or anything like that with him at all.

However, on Saturday, he bit my partner on the nose. We had just come downstairs (he stays downstairs) in the morning, I had said good morning to him with no issues but when my partner said good morning to him, he suddenly bit her on the nose. We are very lucky that she is ok, she’ll have scars but nothing more serious than a few cuts and bruises. The bite wasn’t him latching on, it was a snappy type bite.

We’re at a loss to work out what happened. To us there were no warnings that we saw, it was like a switch went off and he bit her. There have been no signs of behaviour changes in him at all before hand and we just want to understand what happened.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    Ryan

  16. Thanks for the reply KF.

Yeah I have noticed a slight drip when he poops normally but this was just when we were relaxing indoors, he kinda jumped up and that’s when we noticed a tiny dribble but we weren’t sure if it was because he might have been a bit sore since having them expressed or something like that.

  17. Hi everyone,

I know this is not the nicest of topics but I have a question and would like some advice.

Billy had his glands expressed at the vet yesterday after they were full and irritated and seems to be doing great since.

However, this evening, he had a very small amount of leakage and he was quite distressed. My partner (used to be a dog groomer so had a little knowledge) cooled his butt down with some damp tissue and he seemed better. She then checked his glands to see if there was an issue but she found that they seemed fine.

My question is, is it normal to have a small leak after having hem expressed or should we go back to the vet?

    Thanks in advance!

Here's a list of some of the foods the people in the UK use for their diabetic dogs.  You'd need to check the DMB (based on the calculator I mentioned above) but here's some names:

James WellBeloved, Wellness Core Reduced Fat, Pooch & Mutt Health & Digestion, Natural Instincts Low Fat, Burns Chicken & Oats, Chappie, Wainwrights.

I assume you could also ask your vet for a prescription low-fat dry food too.  Wet food has much more fat than dry.  For snacks, a tiny bite of white boiled chicken, a piece of broccoli, a baby carrot.

    Good luck.  Pancreatitis is awful.

Thank you so much for all your help! You have been so helpful to us!

The good news is that he is already on Wainwright’s as his standard food so that’s a relief that he won’t have to change.

And thank you for the link for the DMB, will definitely bookmark that so I can keep an eye on things!

Thanks again! We really do appreciate it!

  19. Thanks for the recipe Cleptogrey! Really do appreciate all the information youve provided!

Thank you cmc333! Thats really helpful info, I havent heard of those foods before but Im in the uk so they might not be available here but Ill be looking around to see what is available here. The figures you have are helpful but out of curiosity, where will it say on the packaging about the fat content and is it per portion or per packet? Sorry for the ignorance on my part, Ive never looked at the the nutritional make up before!

  20. Thank you Hubcitypam. Im not sure of those foods you used (Im in the UK so that might be why) but thanks for the information, definitely going to be sorting some low fat food to get him on soon

Thanks for the recipe cleptogrey! Thats great, might try that one later, just to change things up for him even if its just a little bit! We really appreciate the reply. Thank you

Thank you cmc333. Thats helpful information, I will be reading the labels on everything he has from now and will definitely stick to a less than 10% rule! I dont think Ill ever get a vegetable in Billy though, he seems to absolutely hate them! Haha... I know exactly what youre saying with the puppy dog eyes, knowing how dangerous it can be now we definitely will stick to a proper diet for him! Thanks again!

  21. Thank you Raineysmom, were grateful for the information! Yeah were looking into changing up his treats for low fat versions. Were always giving him little bits from our dinners (I know its not great but those puppy dog eyes! We do try not to give him any fatty bits) were not going to be doing that anymore with anything other than a little chicken.

Glad to hear you didnt get any meds either, thats reassuring.

Now weve just got to find a new vet in our area!

  22. Thanks for the reply Greysmom.

We werent given any meds for him to take when we went to the vets. Should I be concerned?

Well carry on with the bland food in the mean time and see how he goes though. Hes so much more himself already but gotta make sure the insides match the outside I guess! 😂.

    Thanks again
