Still wet behind the ears

Still wet behind the ears (3/9)

  1. Our rescue Grey, AMF Set Off, (currently Argo) was received in 2019, knowing he has PRA and would eventually become blind. My question, has anyone used any device that will help him avoid contact with most objects, walls, edge of doors etc.. He does remarkably well, using stairs, the yard, the household. Still he may get a bit off course and his world has suddenly changed at that point. When available I hook a finger in his collar and talk to him, assisting him to avoid potential contact that he doesnt need to experience. Any thoughts, experience would be appreciated. His Ophthalmologist is not to keen on products currently available. Thanks. VI
  2. We received Shadow Icon shortly after he had a middle rear toe (2 joints) removed. 6 years later, he will occasionally do the 3 leg hop and/or run. He does not apparently experience any phantom pain. It was apparent we must keep the adjoining toe nails shortly trimmed as the remaining digits would receive much more pressure bearing the additional weight. I did not want an additional injury to this foot due to leverage issues. He is doing fine as is and keeps up with the rest of his pack.
  3. Our senior, Shadow Icon, will dig, scratch, bury his head under and throw the dog beds. After 10 minutes he looks at me because none of the 5 nests he has rearranged is "correct." My remdy is to put them the same way as they started out and, VOILA, he is on a bed and groaning in comfort. Asleep in minutes - everytime........
  4. Do not get discouraged. We have brought 2 galgos into this home a bit over 6 months ago. 1, Rigo has had a very very hard time adjusting. He tries so hard, but some traumatic events in his past still haunt him. Patience, patience, reasurrance and patience are what we have used. His response is worth every frustrating minute; the night I coaxed him onto the couch took about 45 minutes. He moved with agonizing slowness- an inch at a time, inch by inch.He is fearful of men, more fearful of men standing, and terrified if you tried to reach for him. He will now rest his head on my lap and relax, enjoying the company. #2, Rufo can not get enough time with us. He is extremely smart. can find a hidden toy or with directions, locate a toy he has missed. We have the benefit of 3 greys who have more or less accepted their cousins as house mates. As info, muzzles and belly bands have assisted when they did not want to be in a crate. Consistent acceptable behavior allows gradual reduced usage of these tools. Also, we used these same guidelines with the greys if needed. Good luck, relax and persevere. And yes, it WAS a bit of a mad house for a small while.....
  5. A little late but .....after lengthy searching, here are my thoughts. We have fed Nutro products for years, even during that recall, because that was all (and I tried many, many different foods) our greys would eat. Those companions have passed from this earth, but of course not from our hearts. They had all reached about 9 or better. The present recalls do include many foods, the SolidGold I have does not match any batch of recalls. A web site - dogfoodadvisor.com has a comprehensive list of recalled brands and... a list of food reviews rating foods from 1 to 5 stars. Today, at every meal I mix, 30/70, 50/50, percent etc., different brands of foods of more or less 3 to 5 stars that have reviewed well. In this fashion I am able to provide variety in addition to being able to gradually incorporate a change of food. This does mean we have at least two bags/containers of different dry foods we feed from 2 times a day plus small portions of a quality wet food. We have five pups, 3 greys and 2 galgos, and boy, are they healthy! They are shiny, have good teeth and wear me out. A good thing!
