    Leash. My dogs are pretty good at coming when called, with a low prey drive. Every once in a while a cat or squirrel or plastic bag catches their eye and they bolt. When they hit the end of the lead they are back but for that split second they are gone. They are not even chasing what triggered them. They are just running. Leash.

    That sounds a lot like what Spencer does. He huffs up a bunch of scent into his mouth and his lips flap loosely as he savors it to get all he can from the smell.

    For us, we are more afraid that our cat (a street-smart ex-tom) will hurt one of the dogs. It took a better part of a year before we felt like we could leave them all alone without risking serious claw damage.

    Glad you finally made it. I never thought a dacshund was a real hound until l hiked 15 miles with a couple in the Tetons. Now l know better. They are significant dogs!
