  1. OP - you've clearly put a lot of thought into this and it sounds like you're taking everything into consideration. Good move going with a group that fosters, too. Contrary to popular belief, many racing greyhounds are actually exposed to children :). There was one trainer in Daytona who would regularly bring her kids to the kennel and the kids would play with the racers and even cuddle up with some of them. Also, many greyhound farms have children present. That being said, not all greyhounds have interacted with kids and there are some who just don't like them or are fearful. My older greyhound LOVES kids - gravitates to them. Put GT'er Bootsy Collins' boy on his ass. :lol. But though he loves kids, he is a resource guarder and he hates anybody being over his head, so he's not a good candidate for living with kids. So those kinds of behaviors are important to take into consideration too. Finally, I HIGHLY recommend that you read Colleen Pelar's Living with Kids and Dogs without Losing Your Mind. Best book out there for raising kids and dogs together. Best of luck to you!

:lol :lol I completely forgot about that!

My kids are mostly indifferent to Bootsy. Fine by me :)

  2. We walk our grey 2x daily, even though we have a fenced yard, and we have 2 small children and work full time. It is possible.

The hardest thing for me is just giving Bootsy the attention he deserves. He is very keen on hands on affection and is frequently brushed aside because we are just so busy. He would like someone to pet him 24 hours per day. He gets less than an hour.

  3. Scouts mom makes a good point. Your tolerance level is as important as the dog's. We adopted our current grey when our son was 2 months old. We added a second son 4 years later. Bootsy has growled and snapped at both of them, but I still say we have had no issues. He would never, ever choose to hurt them, they know what is right and wrong, and we all live together peacefully. He's a part of our family.

  4. I just had a dental done on my 11 year old boy. He had three teeth pulled. The vet took xrays prior to pulling, so the decision was fact based. She even did gum surgery to save a tooth that was perfectly healthy but the gum had receded too much. He did beautifully, and just stole a peanut butter sandwich from my son, so I assume he is back to normal. :lol

While he was recovering we had to soak his kibble so it got like soggy cereal. We did that for 2 weeks.

  5. I posted in the ABT thread, and I thought I'd post here as well, to tap into the wealth of knowledge on GT! Have any of you noticed an increased sensitivity to heat as your hound aged? Bootsy seems to get hot more easily and stay hot longer after coming inside. We don't do long walks or anything - I'm not concerned about any danger. Just noticing something different.

Also, Bootsy is finally starting to show his age - he turned 10 in January. Any suggestions for supplements or diet? Thanks!
