  1. Agree on trying the rice/beef mixture to settle the tummy for a bit.

to prepare rice/hamburger diet easily, just put rice & raw hamburger in a stock pot with ~twice the water that the rice requires and boil them (lid on) for the time required for the rice ... you'll want to keep the fat content of the hamburger at 80% or above, though, because you won't be draining it off with this method. This allows for easy preparation that makes use of the 'chubs' you can get (and if the chub isn't 80% lean, balance out the fat content by adding a small package of much leaner beef)

Also, my hounds dislike veggies and fruit in general (Riley sometimes likes bananas or sweet potatoes ... they appeal to his sweet tooth). I 'hide' the veggies in his food by mixing in baby food.

  2. In my opinion, any rapid change in behavior is always worth mentioning to the vet ... it absolutely could be older age (although 9 doesn't have to be old, as Bee Wiseman certainly demonstrates), a side effect from the medications, a sign that the Deramaxx isn't fully addressing your girl's pain like it should, or an early symptom of something unrelated. You know your hound ... and you'll notice before ANYONE else that something isn't "quite right". It might not be worth an extra trip to the office, but keep watching and noticing, and mention it when your girlie heads to the vet next time.

Keep us posted -- with gratuitous pictures, please!

  3. Riley gets something similar when he chews at an itchy spot ... (like LindsaySF indicated, from a bug bite or something) ... its probably more noticeable because of Bernie's white skin, but I'd probably just watch it and if it looks like its spreading or getting worse (especially if its bothering Bernie) or continues for more than a week or so, I'd check it out a little further.

We'd like pictures of the rest of Bernie on your next post, btw ...

  4. My Riley prefers the late seating for his meals, but when our friends come to visit (which they do a lot, since we have a fenced in yard), all kibble has to come up (her dogs will eat themselves til they explode).

So, rather than a treat, I give him canned food (to ensure he doesn't dawdle in eating it). He gets 1/2 can, and all other dogs in the house (anywhere from 1 to 4) get a small amount as a snack. Without this, Riley cannot settle in at night, so its worth the effort. NOTE: this is factored into his daily food plan so that he doesn't overeat (I let the hounds self-regulate on kibble, but not on their portions of raw or canned food).

    good luck!

  5. Oh I'm so sorry to hear about Get Em's eye ... but it sounds like surgery went well, so I hope he'll be feeling better soon!

My vet mentioned that some of the meds that Riley was on (especially after surgery) cause lots of panting, so that's probably to be expected. Eating the burpdog biskies, is a great sign that he's doing better, though -- yippee!!

Prayers coming your way that all of the bad stuff is behind you now and that healing will be swift & uneventful!

  6. I'm so glad that you were able to get into Arboretum View so quickly -- and pm/call if you need a bit of help while you're in the area ... I live about 15 minutes from there, and work out of my home. So if you need an extra hand (or place to nap, or somewhere for Anubis to visit while you're at the vet, or ???), please know that you can call.

Prayers for good results this week, and that the whining stops (Riley has the whining with barometric pressure changes, and was inconsolable this evening for about 2 hours -- I can only imagine that I'd be a nutcase if I felt that helpless for days!)

  7. If the muzzle route doesn't work, the soft collar (aka towel & duct tape previously mentioned) works wonders. In terms of keeping bandages on the tail, I found some strong tape that was similar to what the vet used ... pm me if you want me to dig it out of my supplies. It will stick to the fur though, so if you're going to need to let air circulate around the wound, you'll want to use a tube over the tail (paper towel roll) to support that.

    Heal quickly!

  8. I use 'prepared' raw food that is pre-ground and mixed with some fruits/veggies/bone meal/organ meats ... if that's what you're looking for, I use a lot of Oma's Pride which I get through a local distributor (they offer a nice ground mix that my hounds like). There are lots of good choices for you, but I mention the brand I use because they do offer it in some areas (including parts of Florida) through local retailers ... my guess is that the retailers that sell Oma's Pride also offer other brands and would have a staff that can help you with your selections. http://www.omaspride.com/Retailers.htm

    Good Luck!

  9. Riley can smell pills of any sort in his raw food ... and will walk away from it even though he's a certified food hound.

He's also very clear that he likes his hamburger with ketchup & mustard ... and done medium-well. Bun is optional.

So that it doesn't go to waste, may I suggest:

    1) mixing it 50-50 with a raw food he DOES eat

    2) putting it in a Nesco in the garage for awhile

    3) boiling it with minimal water and brown rice (I double the water needed for the rice, and add the beef at ANY time along the cooking process ... usually with a bit of garlic ... to make a stew-like mixture that is freezable and which my hounds eat when their tummies get issues).

Good luck! Is he related to Bill in any way, btw?
