In hopes of finding answers and gaining insight into greyhounds with epilepsy, I am conducting a research study in Natalie's honor (my greyhound). Some of you are familiar with Natalie and the struggle we've had to make sense of her epilepsy and to gain control of the seizure monster. If you are not, I'd be happy to share the store with you. Natalie is my heart and I fear for the day she will no longer be a part of my life. If you are owned by a greyhound who experiences epilepsy, even 1 seizure, please contact me. I have a simple questionnaire to send to you for you to complete. The data collected in the questionnaire will hopefully help us find correlations to the many greyhounds that are suffering from epilepsy. All information will remain confidential. Please pm me to receive the questionnaire. Also, share this information with any other greyhound people you know that might be experiencing epilepsy with their greyhound. Guest mistysugar Posted June 14, 2005 Share Posted June 14, 2005 Hi, I have two greyhounds, one with epilepsy. Misty has had it almost from the beginning. She was a bounce back that I took and she had her first seizure about a week later. She has stabilized on Phenyl after about 6 months. Her blood initially showed some liver issues. I will have to get her work up to jar my memory. But the trick was to administer the phenyl without damaging her liver. Oddly enough, after some months her liver returned to normal and we upped her meds from 2 tablets to 3 tablets a day. She has been seizure free for 1 and a half years. Guest GPAGreys Posted July 7, 2005 Share Posted July 7, 2005 My lovely late Tessa developed seizures but I did notice they were precisely timed every am, I had all blood work done and had her on pheno when I realized the cause must be hypoglycemic in nature ( they were more like a diabetic seizure) A fasting blood sugar test was done and the results were insulinoma. She wa maintained on a very strict diet and after the sonogram several months later it showd a tumor encompassing her bladder, intestine and what might have been left of a uterus. My beauty lived 8 months from diagnosis. Important to differentiate between type of seizure. Epilepsy is not the only kind. I did have an adopter whose vet said that low blood sugar can cause seizures and advised them to give snack frequently through out the day... They were also advised to make sure he was getting a good source of protein... Boiled eggs have become snacks. have you seen a neurologist or other specialist that might be able to rule it out? The epilepsy and leukemia are wearing her down faster that she can recover. Because I'm having such a hard time with the decision of putting her down, we are taking it one day at a time. She is very tired and doesn't do much at all. Guest vwagner1 Posted August 9, 2005 Share Posted August 9, 2005 I just PMed you. Not sure if it is too late or not. Kim was retired from racing because she was seizing after races. She is 7 now. She is now on both phenobarbitol and KBr. She has horrible ataxia which we are trying to improve by lowering the KBr. She was at her limit on Pheno so we had to add it in to stop the seizures. She can hardly walk. All she does is lay around. She is also incontinent so I have her on PPA for that but it doesn't help much anymore. She started eating cat litter (crystals kind) recently (not the poop as I clean it up) and she gorges on rolls of toilet paper. She shys away from me. I wonder if it is time for her. My vet suspects a brain tumor. She looks so sad. What do I do? Oh also my male Brad keeps trying to bite her. They used to be the best of friends. Her breathing is slow and she pants a lot too. Guest peacola Posted October 27, 2005 Share Posted October 27, 2005 Just got back from the vet. Whither (my grey) had a seizure last night. Scared the hell out of both of us. According to Dr. Owen, it was caused by high blood pressure on the brain, which is common in senior greys (11 1/2 yrs.). He prescribed Enalapril to control the blood pressure and asked me to keep a log in the event of any reoccurance. I'll be glad to complete your questionaire. In being owned by a greyhound that experiences epilepsy, it has always been a struggle to figure out what the cause of the epilepsy is. It always seems to be a guessing game. Because of this and in hopes to gain some insight and understanding, it was determined that it would be valuable to gather data regarding epileptic greyhounds and see if there are any correlations that may be causing the seizures. As an owner of an epileptic greyhound, you can provide us with vital data for this project. It doesn’t matter if your greyhound has had one seizure or a multitude of seizures, your information is important to us.
