The Hazard Of Having A Poop Eater UPDATED - MONDAY 1/23/23

I'm not going to post this is health and medical as everything is currently under control.

Mark started pacing around this morning and I noticed he was trying to heave but not making it to a complete heave - only about halfway. He was also pacing which he never does. We then noticed that his stomach was having spasms, pretty much in time with the heaves.

The Vet said to bring him in and they would watch him until the vet could examine him. After pacing a while, his back legs were also shaking. We dropped him at the vet, and decided to do an x-ray to find anything obvious. There it was - A ROCK! :jaw Our resident poop eater probably found a rock that had a little bit of poop stuck on it and decided that it looked like dessert.

The rock is in a location where it can be removed by endoscopy if it doesn't move. It should be small enough to pass on it's own, but plan B is that we will go back on Monday and do another x-ray. If it's still in the same place or not moving, then it will be removed

Guess who is getting muzzled for turnouts now? With a stool guard on the muzzle. Our entire yard is nothing but rocks. The muzzle is the safe option.

Poor Mark!  Eating "crunchy" poop is not good. How big is the rock, Don?

It's probably 3/4 of an inch round. I'm not good at judging the size because it's kind of an odd shape. The Vet and the Stat Radiologist both noted that it was small enough to pass through his system.

Yikes! Hope it passes on its own. Are you giving him anything to um, encourage its exit? :goodluck

He wasn't super interested in food yesterday but had a couple small meals last night of the magic Evanger's Canned Chicken. We figured that getting him to eat some soft food  last night was better than not eating. We call that  the magic chicken because no dog has ever turned it down no matter how sick they may be. It's our go-to when one won't eat.  Today he will get a mix of his regular kibble and the magic chicken along with some Olewo Carrots to hopefully push things through. He hasn't wanted breakfast yet which isn't unusual, but he's sleeping next to me and is passing gas like crazy . I'm hoping that's a good sign.

One of our first greyhounds was a poop eater.  It's the main reason we muzzle our dogs for every turnout and always have.  There's is nothing grosser.

Hope everything comes out fine for Mark!!  ;)

He had this habit when he arrived and then stopped for a long time. The behavior started again when Stella arrived and I think it's because she eats a different food that must have something in it that smells attractive to him.  We have been very diligent about picking up so that there's nothing for him to snack on, but every once in a while he finds the remnants of one.buried in the rocks. Stella will be going home to Denver in a few weeks so I'm hoping that the urge to snack stops for him when she leaves. In the meantime, muzzle will be used or he will have an escort right by his side.

6:11 AM Sunday - Still waiting.

Mark has been up and down during the night, a few times with spasms in his belly that are at least partially gas, if not all gas. He paces or just stands when the spasms start.  Giving him a Gas-X resulted in large belches which allowed him to lay down and go back to sleep, and he is drinking when I bring him the water bowl. I'm hoping that this thing is on it's way out. Output was still formed but small on his last turnout at around midnight, so things are still moving.

That things are still moving is encouraging. C'mon Mark, give it up! There's a good boy.

Mark, are we going to start a contest akin to the poop bag in the tree fall-down?  Get that rock rolling on out, sweetie!

Monday - 4:30 PM Update - THE ROCK IS OUT! :yay

Went back to the vet for another x-ray and the rock was still rolling around in his stomach. Saw a different vet at the same practice who has 23 years experience and she suggested that we try having him vomit the rock since it was still in the stomach. They induced vomiting, the rock came up and then they gave him a shot of Cerrenia to reverse of the effect of the inducing med. He acts like nothing happened, so that;s good.

It has been a harrowing 24 hours that included an all night trip to the E-Vet with LaVida in addition to dealing with the Rock Boy around the clock since Friday. . I will post another thread tomorrow with an update on LaVida's incident.  She is home and resting now after suddenly clollapsing last night. I think she is going to  be okay but we need to see if she bounces back and is her old self over the next few days.  Chris and I are both planing a long winter's nap tonight.
