twright3
If I do say so myself I have been a pretty successful greyhound adopter. I adopted Lily from G2G after 1 race when she was about 6 and she lived to over 15, so I must have been doing something right. Now I have Tulip, aged 5, adopted from GAC at 2.5 after 125 races. She is the perfect dog. I have been blessed with lots of resources and started thinking, am I doing enough? Should I adopt a second greyhound? I live in a 2nd floor condo in South Mission Beach and take Tulip for twice-daily walks on the beach. Except, that is, when I’m visiting my rural property in Potrero and lately a similar property of mine in I acquired near Sycuan Casino. She loves to ride in cars and I have 10. So Tulip has a very, very good life. Should we share it with another greyhound? I confess my prejudice: I only want females. I think a male and a female might get along better but I want two females. Can this work? Will they fight? There are a couple of similar females at OG that look promising. Tulip is a very happy dog and I don’t want to disrupt things without a very good chance of success. Thoughts and experiences? Tom
HeyRunDog
I think it's up to Tulip. Take your time and she needs to decide if the second greyhound is right for her irrespective of whether it's male or female. Females tend to be more bossy and you don't want two bosses whereas males want more fuss and cuddles. Having said that others will now post disproving that theory because like humans they are all different. Potomacpupsmom
We have always had two females and they get along very well. In our case, one has naturally become lead dog but they still become best friends, play together and rely on each other for companionship and support. Make sure you take Tulip along to approve the second greyhound- she will tell you! I am really glad we have two females at a time! FiveRoooooers
Good advice to bring Tulip along to meet any potential roommates, if that's possible. Even if it's not, I wouldn't hesitate to bring in a second female. With my 21 campers, there have been only a few instances when we did a M&G and it all worked out just fine. My Annie and Punkin are terrific roommates, each contributing their own special uniqueness to make a whole. Let us know what you decide! greysmom
For the first time in our dog ownership we currently have two females. We did have three living together but lost one last February. The three of them got along fine, with only occasional grumbles about beds or toys, and now the two have become very close. Yes, popular behavioral advice says *not* to have two or more females together. But greyhounds are very comfortable living in colonies of same-gender companions. It's how they're raised, how they train, how they race, how they live in the kennels. Every once in a while you may come across a female who would be better off with a male companion or even as a solo dog, but for the most part, they do fine. If you have the time and the money, and everyone in the household is in agreement, now may be the time for you to add another dog to your lifestyle. Greyhounds have become a very scarce resource, so you should jump on the chance when one comes along. Good luck!! palmettobug
I have one girl in the middle of two boys--she and G have had a few little squabbles where she backed off and screamed, and her and Roman get to chest bumping in play and she gives him a mouthful. Even though Roman is much, much larger. Most of the time she is super sweet and leading the way on walks. So in my case, if I was to get another girl, it would need to be a more submissive girl, because Fuzzy is definitely the Queen. And it can be a bit of challenge to get two to go up stairs, when one is balking! Practice makes perfect! Quote Current Crew: Gino-Gene-Eugene! ShebasMom
When I had Sheba as an only female grey, she got along with every female grey we interacted with, from playdates with females to me taking care of them at my house for my dogsitter friend. I'm sure it depends on the dog as stated, but Sheba was a snarky bossy girl but got along with all the female greys.
