HeyRunDog
Has anyone used an additive in their dogs water to help keep their teeth clean? I brush my two's teeth daily and they have a dental chew midday, and although their teeth are good for greyhounds, I would like to keep them that way and just wondered if adding something to their drinking water would help. DocsDoctor
When Ken came to me with very grotty teeth I found ProDen Plaque Off helpful. It's sprinkled onto food rather than added to water - the active ingredient is some kind of seaweed extract. After we'd finished the pot his teeth were clean enough for just daily tooth-brushing going forward. Tiger's teeth were also a bit grotty on arrival - we sorted that out with rawhide bones, which he still gets occasionally and regards as a great treat Quote Clare with Tiger (Snapper Gar, b. 18/05/2015), and remembering Ken (Boomtown Ken, 01/05/2011-21/02/2020) and Doc (Barefoot Doctor, 20/08/2001-15/04/2015)."It is also to be noted of every species, that the handsomest of each move best ... and beasts of the most elegant form, always excel in speed; of this, the horse and greyhound are beautiful examples."----Wiliam Hogarth, The Analysis of Beauty, 1753. EllenEveBaz
Years ago I tried a water additive that didn't seem to make any difference. I don't remember what was in it. The dogs started out drinking it ok but after a few months, stopped drinking as much, so I quit it. Our vet said that brushing is best, but use whatever the dogs tolerated. He was concerned that some of the water additives might wipe out good bacteria in the gut as well as bad stuff in the mouth. phall
I use TropiClean Fresh Breath Dental Health Solution Dog Dental Water Additive. (I get it from Chew.com). I don't know if it makes a big difference, but I figure it won't hurt. I also brush my dogs' teeth daily. TropiClean also makes a gel - I put the gel on their teeth at bed time so it stays on longer. Again - don't know if it makes a huge difference or not but it's worth it to me. Sox is 8 and Lucas is 9 - both just recently had a dental for the first time.
