Thank you all, for loving my girl and lending support especially over this past 15 months. I can't tell you how grateful I am for this community and the friends we've made here. The care packages, the harness after her amp (which I'd love to pay forward), the advice, sympathy, and virtual happy hours—all of it has meant so much.

I am feeling completely bereft and rudderless without her. She was our world; our days revolved around her and her comfort. I'm trying to focus on her life as a whole and not the very end, when she must have been scared and confused. She fought so hard to stay she required a muzzle and a second sedative shot. When she finally settled and got the last shot, the end itself was swift and peaceful. It was just not the experience I had hoped for, and I feel terribly guilty. I know that's normal, but it's just excruciating when we were trying to prevent suffering and get the timing just right. I can't help feeling she wasn't ready, but I don't know that she ever would have been. I know you all have been exactly where I am—some more times than I can fathom—and it helps to know you understand. It's just so damn painful right now and I can't stop crying.

Sometimes they are not ready to go even when their body is failing them. It makes a heartbreaking time even harder if that is possible, but that is when we really have to step up and be the adult. I know exactly how you are feeling, but try not to second guess, you did do the right thing :grouphug In time, the memories of all the good times will overshadow the sadness (most of it anyway)

Damn, now I am crying again!

Paul who was such a compliant dog, always, fought his euthanasia.  He was almost 13, very frail, couldn't stand up to eat and had become incontinent.  He would want to go for a walk, but, couldn't do more than cross the street.  He was a proud racer for over 4 years.  I wanted him to go with dignity, not laying in his own pee.  It was hard.  I understand your sorrow.  Don't second guess yourself; you gave her peace and the ability to be pain free.  G-d bless.

You have always done right by Sweep, always. You could see where her declining health was taking her, but of course she didn't know that. Dogs live in the moment! Her last days were good ones, no crises, and those are the gifts that will help carry you through this difficult time. The first three days are the worst and you will get through them. Please be good to yourselves. No second guessing; rather, focus on the joys and those incredible smiles your beautiful, silly, Cindy Lou Woo girl gave you. Our tears and hearts are with you :kiss2 :grouphug

I think it’s natural to question yourself endlessly when you’ve made such a big decision for someone else. All I can say is that you’ve come to that decision after careful consideration about what’s best for Sweep, so whatever you decided could not be wrong. It’s harder because it wasn’t as smooth as you had wanted it be, but as many people say on this forum, better a day too early than a day too late. That bit of resistance she gave just shows what spirit the girl had, and was one of the many reasons why you loved her so. We are sending hugs your way.

I am so sorry is way too inadequate.  I have an almost 13 YO here with a terminal condition and this hit way too close to home.  I also had a fighter to the very end and it made things even harder.  My heart is broken with and for you and John as you figure out how to navigate your new normal.  I wish you much peace.  Sweep, beautiful girl, you really need to send your people a sign that all is well.

Hugs,

Cindy
