She's an approximately 8 year old podenco maneta found abandoned in a hunter's field when her usefulness as a puppy factory was done. The rescue group, CdP, took care of her huge hernia, spay, treatment for Leishmanias, and other internal parasites. Flights from Spain had ended because flight patrons could no longer accompany dogs on the trip to the US. Tracey McLaurin with SHUG created Senior Sighthound Sanctuary. She uses an escort company to bring the dogs over on commercial flights. The group's first transport to JFK was in November. Rita arrived on the second transport Dec 9th. By the 12th she was home in North Carolina. She is blind in one eye and her head is in a permanent tilt, both probably caused by the Leishmaniasis transmitted by a bite from a sand fly. Fortunately her case is under control and being treated with Allopurinol, a medicine for gout in humans. I'm a sucker for a happy face. And dogs with sad pasts. And since this is December, and since my other 2 podencos Hada and Lulu also had a rough past, I am reminded of the movie "Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer & the Island of Misfit Toys". She zooms around and around and doesn't understand why I don't do zoomies too. Rita still has some "sleep-snarkle" but seconds later all is good.
