Anyone know what monocytes and neutrophils are on a blood test?

Recommended Posts

Burdette has a tumor on his head and had pre-surgery bloodwork done.  These factors came in very high monocytes 1,280 (ref range 0-840) and the nuetrophils 22,528 (ref range 2,060-10,600)

His platelets came in low at 163 (ref. range 170-400) so vet put him on prednisone.

They are white cells.

Neutrophils are increased generally when fighting an infection. Monocytes increased means the body is fighting something.  Many times a virus.

Boils down to fighting some sort of infection.

Is it possible the tumor is an abscess instead?

Well - the tumor has gotten smaller since the 2 days he's been on the meds.  We go back on Thurs so we'll see what the vet says.

Thanks!

This is probably a case where a Fine Needle Aspiration may prove helpful.

One of mine has lumps all over, with new ones popping up all the time.  Our vet does an in house FNA and looks at the cells under their microscope.  They are usually just lipomas (fatty bumps), but the type of cells can be informative.  She also keeps a body map of all the lumps we find so we can keep track of them.

It looks like your vet is using a non-greyhound reference range.

This is Dr Stack's normal range:  80,000 - 200,000

And this is Dr Couto's range:  110,000 -205,000
