SIGreyLady Posted October 9, 2020 Posted October 9, 2020 Burdette has a tumor on his head and had pre-surgery bloodwork done. These factors came in very high monocytes 1,280 (ref range 0-840) and the nuetrophils 22,528 (ref range 2,060-10,600) His platelets came in low at 163 (ref. range 170-400) so vet put him on prednisone. MP_the4pack Posted October 10, 2020 Posted October 10, 2020 (edited) They are white cells. Neutrophils are increased generally when fighting an infection. Monocytes increased means the body is fighting something. Many times a virus. Boils down to fighting some sort of infection. Is it possible the tumor is an abscess instead? SIGreyLady Posted October 10, 2020 Author Posted October 10, 2020 Well - the tumor has gotten smaller since the 2 days he's been on the meds. We go back on Thurs so we'll see what the vet says. Thanks! Quote Mimi- mom to Burdette (KB's Burdette), Sophie (LL's Stupid Is) and bridge babies Kelsey (Kelso's Logo), Sterling (Cold B Tiger), Fritz, Tasha, Chloe and Molly
greysmom Posted October 10, 2020 Posted October 10, 2020 This is probably a case where a Fine Needle Aspiration may prove helpful. One of mine has lumps all over, with new ones popping up all the time. Our vet does an in house FNA and looks at the cells under their microscope. They are usually just lipomas (fatty bumps), but the type of cells can be informative. She also keeps a body map of all the lumps we find so we can keep track of them. macoduck Posted October 10, 2020 Posted October 10, 2020 His platelets came in low at 163 (ref. range 170-400) so vet put him on prednisone. It looks like your vet is using a non-greyhound reference range. This is Dr Stack's normal range: 80,000 - 200,000 And this is Dr Couto's range: 110,000 -205,000 Quote Freshy (Droopys Fresh), NoAh the podenco orito, Howie the portuguese podengo maneto Angels: Rita the podenco maneta, Lila, the podenco, Mr X aka Denali, Lulu the podenco andaluz, Hada the podenco maneta, Georgie Girl (UMR Cordella), Charlie the iggy, Mazy (CBR Crazy Girl), Potato, my mystery ibizan girl, Allen (M's Pretty Boy), Percy (Fast But True), Mikey (Doray's Patuti), Pudge le mutt, Tessa the iggy, Possum (Apostle), Gracie (Dusty Lady), Harold (Slatex Harold), "Cousin" Simon our step-iggy, Little Dude the iggy ,Bandit (Bb Blue Jay), Niña the galgo, Wally (Allen Hogg), Thane (Pog Mo Thoine), Oliver (JJ Special Agent), Comet, & Rosie our original mutt.
MaryJane Posted October 11, 2020 Posted October 11, 2020 Also, on the platelets - they need to do a manual check to make sure they are not clumping which could lead to artificially low results. As others noted on the platelets - the vet needs to check the greyhound values. Quote
