Hi All! We adopted a greyhound a few weeks, right from the track/ kennel life. He has adjusted to potty training relatively well, but struggles to make it through the night. We typically do last walk of the night at 10:30, and he goes out right at 5am. He has been unable to hold off to get outside (made it most of the way and then loses control) and has gone to the bathroom in the house (caught in the act at 4:30). He's almost 3, so I think he should be able to hold it slightly longer. Selfishly, I'd love to be able to get more than 6 hours of sleep.

During the day, he gets a 5am walk (about an hour, a pee break at 8:45, an afternoon pee break, an evening pee break, and then a final walk at 10:30 that's usually 45 minutes or so. Eventually that evening break will become a walk, but we live in a small city and he's not adjusted yet to traffic.

Any advice?

Hold onto his collar when you are taking him out in the morning so he doesn't get a chance to squat or lift.  Have you tried a belly band?  That might work.

Might have your vet check for a UTI.

Agree about asking the vet to check for a urinary tract infection - it definitely sounds to me as if this could be the problem, especially him wanting to hold it in on the way out, and failing. This isn't typical of a young, healthy male dog - I am always amazed how long they can and will wait for the right spot. Tiger my latest adoptee doesn't even want a bathroom break when I get up, will save it all up until we go out for a walk after breakfast and he can mark his favourite trees and lamp-posts!

"It is also to be noted of every species, that the handsomest of each move best ... and beasts of the most elegant form, always excel in speed; of this, the horse and greyhound are beautiful examples."----Wiliam Hogarth, The Analysis of Beauty, 1753.
