Hi all, I'm new here and I'm a new greyhound owner. I adopted Mully, a six year old ex racer 3 weeks ago and hes really doing well. He is a very timid scared of everything dog,  but gradually coming out of his shell. My only problem is that he poos and wees in the night. I get up at 3am and let him out but in the morning there is always a mess. Hes come on so well, but I'm not sure if time and patience will cure this or does anyone have any suggestions for me plz. Hes fine during the day, with just an occasional accident if he gets scared so any help appreciated ty 😁

Where does he sleep?  Could you have him on his bed in your room? This doesn't have to be for ever - both my guys started out sleeping in my room for the first few weeks, and then happily graduated to a bed in the back bedroom.  It reassured them and helped them bond with me as they settled in to their new life. Don't forget, for all their lives these dogs have lived with other dogs around. Plus you'd hear him getting up and be able to whisk him outside.

Also - is he warm enough? Here in London Ken has been wearing his fleece housecoat these last few nights, after the heating goes off - we had a hard frost last night. If Mully's having to get up and shake himself to keep warm, it may bring on the thought "may as well do something else while I am up!"

Hi and ty so much for the advice, Mully does sleep on his quilt in my bedroom and I have a house fleece on order as I thought he may be cold. I live in Scotland and it has been -9 here at night and yes he does often get up and shake. I didnt realise that meant had was cold tho. I do have another dog,  Bryn a 9 year old lurcher that Mully follows everywhere. Bryn sleep half in the backroom in his bed and half on my bed with me. So far Mully hasn't attempted to get on my bed, which I'm happy about. We livd in a very old cottage with coal fire so it does get cold at night. Ty 🤗

Very good, :goodluck the housecoat will help! Yes I suspect if he is getting up multiple times in the night to shake himself, as opposed to once or twice, he is feeling the cold.  It's great he's got Bryn as well as you to show him the ropes as he settles in. After the first month or so he will know what his new life is all about and probably begin to get quite cheeky!  Meanwhile I'm sure everyone on here would love to see a photo of them together if you can work out how to post one!

Lol if tried and tried to put up a pic but it wont do it sorry, I must be thick 😂. Hope to get the fleece in a couple of days so hopefully it will help my beautiful boy. I'm also having problems with his walks, he will only go the same route lol, if I try to go a different way he freezes completely and refuses to go. He also does this whenever anyone comes towards us etc, luckily my village only had 312 people in it so dont see many people. Loud noises also scare him, he wouldn't go out the door the other day because the children in the school were out playing and making a noise 😊

Hello and welcome! Hopefully your boy will settle in soon and will be less spooked by things as he becomes more familiar with them. Maybe he would benefit from a short walk before bedtime so he can void his bowels before he settles down. If it’s not a fully formed stool it may help to look at when he was last wormed. What are you cleaning it up with? It might be worthwhile checking if it’s free from ammonia as that might encourage him to keep going in the house. Also, are you transitioning him to new food as this might be unsettling his tummy a bit. Ours recently had a spell of leaving presents for us because he was shredding fig leaves which made him ill (don’t ask) but it just shows that there are so many variables to consider!

if you’re on Instagram you should be able to copy photos (press and hold if you’re using an iPad) and paste them into your thread, I assume the same will work for Facebook.

Hi and ty so much for all the help. I have tried walking him before bed time but he seems to be scared of the dark...its pitch black here mostly at night time as we are in the middle of nowhere with only a few street lights. I have to really make him go out last thing in the garden bless him but if my Bryn goes out he will follow him but I cant see if he goes lol. He has been recently worked by the greyhound centre that I got him from. I have changed his food but that was over 2 weeks ago. He does poo an awful lot more than any of my other dogs iv had, yesterday I counted 8 times lol...the things we have to do 😂x

Don't be surprised if he suddenly freezes altogether even on his usual walk. It can be frustrating but they do overcome it with time. Look on the forum for freezing/statuing and you'll find plenty of advice.

Grace did the same thing but got over it...mostly. She'll go any route for her morning walk but the late afternoon/evening walk has to be the same route
