If you're asking about a spinal *stroke* it does happen - not commonly, but enough that it's familiar. Most often called a "fibrocartilaginous embolism" or FCE. It's super scary, and the first few days/weeks can be stressful for humans and dog alike. Most dogs do recover at least enough to have a good quality of life. Some recover nearly completely. I hope you've got some competent medical advice from a canine neurologist or specialist. Early intervention is key. Good luck! Rickiesmom Posted October 2, 2019 Share Posted October 2, 2019 This is not a term I'd heard before either, but from a bit of quick reading, it sounds like your dog needs to be in the care of a neurological specialist asap, if s/he isn't already. Are you able to provide additional information about what happened (assume there was some sort of trauma), symptoms, and diagnostics / treatment so far? Smithwold Posted October 2, 2019 Author Share Posted October 2, 2019 Wren is 7 yr old racing whippet and was late to the finish. In being so she crashed into her bigger sister and appeared to ‘knock herself out’. There was some movement though but at one point she was given mouth to mouth and CPR. Lucky that I recently did a course! after she seemed to be coming round it was obvious she had zero control over her limbs and couldn’t weight bare. Was rushed to the nearest open vets as it was a Sunday. They gave fluids and pain killers and before releasing her gave anti inflammatory. Following day was taken to her own vet for follow up and prognosis to be told she had spinal shock. It’s now 4 days after the event and she an stand, feed and toilet without aid but is still very wobbly. Reading online it can take several weeks to recover fully. Her racing was due to end next year as whippets retire at 8. She now will spend her days living the life of luxury that she always has done but no more racing. I'd still see a neuro specialist just to be sure there are no surprises, but it does sound like time, anti-inflammatories and love are doing the trick. Did they do any xrays at all? recommend an mri or other testing? It's good she's recovering so quickly! That's bodes well for further healing. Her own vet seen the following day ruled out x-rays because if the rate that mobility was returning. Wren is functioning ok but still a little wobbly. Typical whippet, can’t keep them still.
