screen jump

For lack of a better description I'm calling this a screen jump.

When I go from topic to topic and page to page, this image of GT pops up for a second before appearing like the normal page.
What do you think is causing this?

a very slow internet connection would cause that, displaying the page before the cascading style sheet (CSS) loads.

I've been seeing a lot of that lately.  We are on Cox for internet service and even though they keep telling us about the great "FREE" speed upgrade they've given us, everything has been much slower for the past month or so on Cox.

you can try clearing your cache, maybe there is an old corrupt style sheet stored, but I've only ever seen that on slow connections,and I mean really slow, as in there is an issue. Cox broadband should be fine even with their slowest plan.

Simple steps on how to clear the cache please.

Instructions I'm finding say to click on the Windows icon and enter Run in the command box. I don't remember doing that in the past.

My internet speed is good. I use Spectrum. I can zip to various websites without seeing the screen jump.

Jeff, I followed the instructions from your link for Firefox for desktops. I do have the current version of Firefox Quantom 68.0.1 (64-bit).

Since this only happens with GT, should I attempt to change browsers? Chrome or something else?  I don't want to use Edge or Internet Explorer II and I know nothing about Safari.

after you cleared your cache, you are still seeing that CSS error? If so, yeah, try chrome, unfortunately (for you  )the problem is on your end, nothing I can do on my side will correct that.

I haven't changed browsers yet. Pages on other sites still load fast and without the jump.

I ran some speed tests. Not sure if these numbers are bad or not. I am also wondering if it's time for a new modem. My only wifi connection is to the printer, desktop is ethernet.

Just switched Chrome and made it my default browser. I still get the screen jump. Occasionally see it on another website.

Editing to add: even though the browser showed I was on GT, I had to manually enter greytalk.com into the Chrome browser bar. I no longer get the screen jump.

However, my bookmarks in Firefox did not transfer over. Haven't yet found how to send them to Chrome's bookmarks. 

Transferred my bookmarks successfully.

Now trying to set my homepage on Chrome to a particular website but when I click Home it goes to the Google search page.

I think I've got it now. I post my headaches here so I can somewhat see what I have successfully completed.

it's a bummer you had to change browsers. Now that you are up and going on chrome and have all your book marks, you may want to uninstall firefox and reinstall it, see if it works after that.

I think I shall try that install/reinstall tomorrow.  I feel so dirty with Google Chrome.   I just don't care for how it works.

if the uninstall has an option to delete all settings and everything, be sure to choose that, since something was awry, you don't want that parameter coming back on a reinstall using previous data.

I uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox. No more screen jump.

I had to manually add my usual favorite/quick access sites to the toolbar.

I followed the steps to import my bookmarks back from Chrome to FF.

The only thing different now is that "from Google Chrome" now appears in my toolbar. If I try to remove it from the toolbar all my bookmarks disappear and I have to re-import them from Chrome. Is there a way to remove that "from Google Chrome" toolbar link?

But it did work without jumping whilst on Firefox for about 10 minutes. I went to read FB and when I came back, so did the jump.

You should be able to change the name of that bookmark folder.  Right click on it, select properties, and there should be an option to edit the name to Ducky Bookmarks or whatever you want it to be. 

Jeff - I was looking at some help screens for Firefox and found this.  Do you think this could be the issue that Ducky is having? 

DNS Prefetching

Firefox attempts to speed up loading new websites by using DNS Prefetching, which can cause page load errors with some system configurations. To disable DNS Prefetching:

1. In the address bar, type about:config and press Enter.

   • The about:config "This might void your warranty!" warning page may appear. Click I accept the risk! to continue to the about:config page.
2. Right-click in the list of preferences, select New, and then select Boolean.
3. In the Enter the preference name field, enter network.dns.disablePrefetch and click OK.
4. Select true when prompted to set the value and click OK.

I don't see how dns pre-fetching could cause it, but can't hurt to try
