How to deal with hardwood stairs

Recommended Posts

What have people done with hardwood stairs that are becoming a slipping hazard? Leo won't slow down, he scrambles up at the speed of light, and he's had a couple of injuries as a result of falling. Any suggestions, ideally ones that won't wreck resale value?

Individual stair treads from Home Depot. They have several patterns available and hold up well.

We used nonskid washable stair treads, bought online, in our first house with Sweep. In our current house, with two sets of hardwood stairs, we bit the bullet and installed runners. One we had to have done professionally because there's a turn in the stairs, but for our straight basement stairs we were able to DIY it following online tutorials, using two inexpensive 7' runner rugs. I think as long as you choose something relatively neutral it won't hurt resale value. (Though cats using one as a scratching post will. :angryfire)

Yup!

We used double sided carpet tape on the leading edge to hold ours in place.

Thank you, Home Depot treads installed and the problem seems to be solved!
